Chainsaw trouser

As I have said in recent post I am about to do my climbing course. In the build up I am trying to get the kit together that I will require.

As tree work is only one aspect of my work we do not have anyone in management with knowledge off tree work and the ppe required. I have 2 pairs of chainsaw trousers now a bib n brace pair of shtil and a better more lightweight pair of shtil. But they are only class A I think.

My understanding is they have to be a class c for climbing?? (I may be right off the mark please bare with me.) They have just bought me a pair of portwest trousers that are worse quality than the 2 I already have.

My question is what is the lowest standard I should accept? Considering I will be the sole climber once qualified.

Any clarification you can give me will be appreciated

For the climbing and aerial rescue course (old CS38) you won't need any chainsaw trousers - wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

For the chainsaw part (old CS39) I imagine most providers would want type C full protection trousers. Some providers may be able to lend / hire you some.

As far as working goes I believe that type C are 'safer' as they provide all round protection but they're *mostly* really hot. You can put a note in the risk assessment about the heat aspect and wear type A, obviously then taking more care of the saw in the tree with limited protection

I dont know where you are based in the UK but all the training providers in Scotland would insist on type c all round protection trousers.

I really recommend you go to an arb shop or and arb show and try on trousers as the fit depends greatly on your build and shape.

Try to get light comfy trousers that allow you freedom of movement ie you can bring your kees up to your chest, spread your legs and so forth.

Trust me when i say trousers that are comfy, light and allow freedom of movement are very important, and pretty expensive.

Hope this helps good luck mate

Strides have come along way since I started and no way would I go back to wearing ba pair of sleeping bags round my legs but I would suggest you get what is reqired for your tickets then make your own mind up as to what you will use in the future .

Thanks for all the replys. I work for the public sector and the budget cuts are borderline embarrassing but on this issue I think I will have to be a little stubborn.

Buy your own.I work for my local authority and we get issued basic trousers which are fit for purpose-but only just.

Comfort and practicality are very important

The husky technicals are definitely cooler up trees but I think the lack of tick guards means you get a breeze up your strides ! Not a bad trouser though and honeys bros did have them at a good price.

I do like the pfanners but the price is getting hard to justify.
