Becoming Competent

I was 48 years young but quite fit. Did my basic climbing/rescue and chainsaw in the tree then did my rigging, pruning and Loler tickets. Recon I've got at least another 5 years in the tank.

I started at 38. Been going a year and half now, but only do two days a week. I very much consider myself a novice but find myself getting better / more efficient / fewer mistakes pretty much on every climb.

Good chance your OP was constrained to mostly climbing, but in the broader sense of "competent" most replies so far trace back to what I shared previously.

 

There's lots of talk about climbing, but good climbing does equate to being a competent arborist. It would be more enlightening if replies shared their path to horticultural awareness and how much time they chose to invest in that aspect.

 

What did they feel took more time, getting competent at climbing, ore competent as a knowledgeable arborist? Did it seem equal? Did one seem tougher or easier to learn?

A good and trusted groundy can be an advantage also . He should look after all your needs that can be done from the ground leaving you to concentrate on your job . Just a thought .

Very very very true,a good climber is only as good as the person on the deck lookin after his needs.

When you get a good groundie-dont let him/her go,a good team is poetry in motion.
