Bramble cutting - torn

Recommended Posts

Iv got about an 1/2 acre of brambles to clear next week, I think I'm going to brushcut with a mulching head and then I have a rake on my digger which has tines @75mm spacings, going to comb over the area after to remove as much of the arrisings as poss whilst hopefully pulling a lot of the roots out too.

Hi Mathew, my recent attempt at bramble clearing was by ripping through the mass of it with a mini digger and tumbling it into a big pile. A lot of the bramble roots are pulled up. Then follow up with an Austrian scythe (hand tool)... and finally finish off with a strimmer fitted with an Oregon mulching head.

I found that much quicker and less physical effort than brushcutting.

The pile (or piles) of brambles can be left as excellent habitat for bugs, wasps, bees, etc.

cheers, steve

I don't know if I'd go as far as saying I hate brambles (and apologies if I've already stated this earlier on!) but I'm sure I've seen them growing under dense cover in fir plantations and by the time my little trees become that established so that they have a proper canopy, goodness knows how thick the brambles will have become. In some places they are about 15mm thick and are growing way up into other trees, making it quite hazardous when moving amongst them. I do know they are important for wildlife, which is why I started this post in the first place
