mistletoe management

Hi,

Got some middle aged lime trees that have significant mistletoe clumps in crown. The trees are located in a high use school carpark. There is also major deadwood present that needs removing. My instincts would be to thin out some of the heavier clumps of mistletoe whilst deadwooding to reduce failure of individual branches breaking out.

Seems to be a lack of literature on mistle toe or I'm not looking in the right places....also do you think it is a sign of stress? Do trees compartmentalise against mistletoe invasion?

Any thoughts welcomed

I don't think the trees are necessarily under stress . During a typical crown care job we will typically as you say remove the heavy ball ( very heavy even ) and deadwood . It's very abundant in Austria especially heavy on the black hybrid pops and Acer . The trees are otherwise healthy . But I think a heavy infestation on an already stressed tree could see it's demise . The large bulbous callous which appears at the base of the mistletoe I'm not sure if this is the branch compartmentalizing it or whether it's a sugar source , I would be interested to know to .

Easy to see why it's been a symbol of vitality , virility for a long long time ..

Hi,

In my opinion its systemic & depending on severity of invasion to the host tree, will eventually kill it.

I would consider removing infected limbs to control its spread, which will prolong the time between remedial action & eventual felling.
