Why is my felling lever rubbish.

Evening all,

 

So I have one of these.

 

 

And whilst its ok as a felling lever using for anything else is pointless. The black hook just does not hold. What is wrong? What, if anything can, I do to fix/improve it. Or worst case what else should I buy?

I unbolted and chucked the hook away, the lever's great though.

Carve a notch with the bar nose to slot the hook in to.

Re-grind the hook profile to make it more acute.

Too sort, IMO.

 

I have 4ft one, excellent for felling and rolling butts.

That little one is great when you're on the spurs ringing down bigger lumps.

Also, you really need to move both hands as far back as possible, you are strangling it (thats how my joiner dad used to describe my use of a hammer as a child, holding it too near the head)

If you want to roll big logs a proper cant hook is better. Since I got the bigger felling bar, 4' like Skyhuck's, I very rarely use the wee one. I find you need to give the hook a good kick to get it to bite if you're using it as a cant hook, or even a couple of taps with the hammer/axe if it really won't bite. Bigger bar gives more leverage for felling too. Obviously this is ground based, up the tree wee bar is lighter and easier to handle.
