  1. 1. Are there too many tree surgeons in the UK?

    • Far too many; so much competition I can barely survive!
      100
    • Not too many but don't need any more!

    • Could do with a few more to be honest!

    • Nowhere near enough. So much wood and so little expertise!

well, whats the solution?

these threads conclude that people go to cheap, dodgy workers, because of price.

perhaps everone should include in their next advertising a, ' why go for a proper surgery company' pull-out info sheet. highlghting good code of practice, what to look for in a company, what to look for on a quote (often tell tale signs of a bad one) and other good advice.

circulate it on arbtalk, send it out as a standardised help sheet, preformed pdf, share the same one and update it 6 monthly / yearly.

does your crap landscaper come on here 4 hints and tips? i doubt it.

have the arbtalk adress on the bottom, perhaps. clients can come on here and check out profiles. see past work, pics etc. the answer is right here...arbtalk!

can arbtalk provide customer reassurance? is this permissable by the people who run it?

i dont know, but this could be a good portal for that...

before another rant starts ( justified rant that is!) how about DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!

I think that bit sums it up, so there isnt much that can be done.

I want to set a few records straight here, theres been a lot of talk, from a climbers viewpoint, and from a bosses viewpoint and all shades in between.

For the bosses-

Do not try to kid us employees, we are not stupid, when you moan about paying 40% tax it means your earning over the threshold, when you live in a barn conversion in the country drive an audi estate as well as having a company L200 etc etc etc your earnings and life at your own control.

It isnt THAT easy for all you guys I know, but i owned my own firm, had three guys to find wages for and work for and a company to suppport and grow, IT WAS THE TIME OF MY LIFE. My customers staff appreciated me and made me feel i was doing a good job, I was my own boss, and controller of my destiny, and no one could condescend to me and treat me like a numb nuts cos they OWNED ME.

Now climbers-

any climber on 120 a day, your at the top of your game, that means you cant bitch that a jobs too tough, or the days too wet, you get top dollar for being a top dog and its the sort of money you get for backing up your firm by being good, fast efficient and most of all, pulling not only your own wieght but the wieght of the lads below you who earn less cos they dont give a sh...

It also means your going to have to eat sh.... whenever and wherever its dished to you, cos your boss is going to tell you and rightly so if you dont like it f off!

You bosses think you would take 30k a year tommorow for a climbers position? BS

you have NO idea what it is like to be told that you dont know your job as well as the boss, that all those mind numbingly dull tedious boring and mundane jobs are YOURS cos your on good money, you will have to go and work in the rain and the snow and all the other sh.... while the boss has a "catch up in the office day"

If you want to attend seminars at 250 a day youll not get the vat back, youll not make a "bonus" when the nieghbour taps you on the shoulder and if you work hard and efficiently make your company a good score for the day you wont go home early, youll be punished by jet washing vehicles and sweeping the yard!

its swings and roundabouts boys, its always greener, but I wouldnt have any other life, I love trees and my work, be that owning my own firm with all the "poor me " stresses or working for some patronising unapreciative boss who doesnt care to notice I hold his firm up too!

i paid 10 hrs wages today for 7 hrs earning work. i take the hit every time. a road was closed so had to take a detour on the way, had to wait about for going over stuff with the customer then wait for payment, look at a job on the way home. i dont get paid for that. if i dont do it then i done get any more work

i will never forget when my groundy kept asking to do things in the evenings and weekends fishing golf etc

had to exsplain that i couldnt and that i have NO time for socialising or playing

and that to keep us busy i had to look at at least 5-10 jobs a week.

you guys understand most jobs are never over a days work so you have to look at, price up, and get at least 1 job every day.

we are not like other profesions ie builders who if lucky find themselves with 3months worth of work from 1 job

oh and yeah i agree shrek the pressure of paying wages which inturn finances other peoples lives is massive

my grondys been grumbleing about money lately.

what can i do ..... i cant control what he spends and on what

ive told him before that i will pay him 1000 per week but your be out of a job within 2 weeks

in regards to original post there is to many tree cutters out there and enough quality tree surgeons, the customer has to chose between the two

And you assume that we havent been in that position why?

I did all that crap for years for A LOT less than £120 a day.

Tbh I know of no climbers on 30K a year, in this area anyhow. And I doubt there are many subies on that either.
