Made a bloody rookie mistake today. The brake engaged as I pulled the clutch cover off. Got it off and changed the chain etc then realized it wouldn't go on. Duh!!!!!! What's the best way to disengage the brake with the cover off without doing damage?

Done this a few times on a few models, generally wedged it in a corner of a work bench or tipper back and forced the lever over with a stick. Just apply the pressure gradually or you risk spearing yourself, been there done that and have the lump of stuck in my palm to prove it!

Take the clutch drum off, put the side cover back on and reset the brake. Once reset remove side cover and refit the clutch drum.

We get this all the time with huskys. Easiest way is to remove the bar and chain, put the sprocket cover on and move the chain brake handle back and forth a bit until it locates into the mechanism in the sprocket cover then disengage the brake as normal. You will have to put a bit of pressure on the outside of the sprocket cover opposite the mechanism.

I keep meaning to make a video of this technique as it's really easy one you have seen how to do it.

As suggested by someone on here years ago, cut 3 sides off a combi spanner with an angle grinder, and that fits in the mechanism.

Handy tool to have when it comes to replacing a brake band

Not my video, but this is the idea:
