A pipe dream of mine, one day in the future, if the future allows, is to get a winterised boat, probably steel hull, with a wood stove and loads of insulation, and sail north to Iceland, eastern Greenland, and the tiny little speck a few hundred km north-east of Iceland, Jan Mayen Island, and do some ski touring right off the deck of the boat. 

 

It's got a volcano, a scientific research station, and naff all else. Heaven.

If you are serious aboiut this then you need to take a read of 'North to the Night' by Alvah Simon - a guy who overwintered up there in a 36' steel boat.  He had intended to do the whole thing with his wife but she had to leave as her father was ill so he did the core winter bit on his own.  It wasn't mainland Greenland, but Bylot Island which is on the west side of Baffin Bay well inside the Arctic Circle.

Winter there is serious stuff!! Never been in the arctic night, but could do the midnight sun any time (a few really good trips to Tromso, kind of fell in love with the eternal day, never been for the polar night though (family hit the finances before I could), would need a real strong mind I think).

Dreams aside, given your rescue and climbing skills you could hitch a free ride on oosterschelde, the Dutch tall ship. She's due to go north again after she's finished her Darwin trip. Seriously cool guys and a magnificent vessel.

always on the lookout for competent, chilled out crew. They have the best contacts too!

Alternatively there's safehaven marine in Cork, frank has been known to take the odd guest up that way on trials, probably not your type of vessel though! They hold the Iceland to Ireland by sea record.

Far from it - you can pick up a well found steel boat around 36-40' for under £50k, do the trip and then sell it on your return.  Overwintering really does dictate either steel or aluminium - and VERY large fuel tanks.
