Some amusing comments here. Sling and foot holds I think. No chance I will be dropping the whole pollards, the garden would be smashed to smithereens! I plan to clear the growth first and then log down a few feet on each pollard. One of those tricky-ish gardens where things could easily get broken. Tree is far to big for the garden personally.

Yes that is usually better on a re-pollard because you are inflicting smaller wounds on the tree but on this occasion the willow had to come down in height by about 10/15 foot from below the previous pollard. The few stems that hadn't been reduced, the growth post last pollard was removed.
