Who hires a firewood processor in ??

I see a few threads from some of you about hiring out your firewood processor.

What type of customer hires your processor, are they farmers, small holders etc? I ask the question, as although the idea sounds good in theory I stopped and asked myself , "Is there really a demand for this type of service"?

Have you found that their is a VERY small demand for the service, that only brings in a bit of pocket money, certainly not a stand on its own (financially) service.

We only hire with operator and it's a mix of customers. Small holders and farmers are the majority with a few domestic jobs thrown in. Work for several smaller log sellers who recon it's works out cheaper to hire than buy and maintain a processor.

A word of warning though. It's taken me years to build up enough clients to justify doing the contract work. Once someone has had me in they don't go back to doing it themselves but getting them to take that step takes a lot of convincing. There are hell of a lot of processors out there so don't expect to be rushed of your feet.

We did it to start with but it didn't suit our set up, we didn't have the suitable storage for a days worth of processing at the time and we ended up with too much getting soaking wet.

We've got better storage now but it's still better having our own and being able to do a couple of hours/an afternoon here or there when we have time.

We probably don't make full use of the processors output currently but it's a long term investment anyway after all.

I've got a finger in several pies and bought the processor to supplement income at a time of year when the other bits of the pie were cooling down a bit.

I hire it out to mostly farmers, estates or small firewood sellers. These customers tend to hire it for longer periods than most and I'm happy to hire it to them on its own w/o an operator.

I've only had the processor for a little over a year now and with next to no advertising it's taken in close to £15k. Not a fortune, but it's paid back the initial investment and given us a better return than a savings ISA ever could have.

It's not a get rich quick thing but added together with other income sources it can give a decent income.

Wow thats brave. Has it not come back all bent out of shape? I presumed inexperienced users would damage it. I know I made a few mistakes being overly ambitious on diameter when we first got the Farmi. Can I ask what insurance costs? :thumbup1:
