Hi all, I'm new to CTC Recruitment (we only recruit arborist jobs) and trying to understand the market and share what I learn. One of my first blogs is trying to make CV writing less stressful and more effective. Forestry Winching Training

Could anyone please direct me to some useful reading on winching techniques and training.  I'm looking to purchase a slightly older double drum winch to extract wind blows from around the estate which came down during the winter for chipping my own biomass.  (Valtra with Jake and crane, Heizohack, forwarding trailer).  I have a pretty good idea of where its at for my low output needs but would like a little theoretical night time reading.   Thanks in advance

Does any one buy large quantities of poplar

New to this site. But though was worth an ask.    Ive recently started helping a large estate with thier tree management, they have a large woodland planted with 2 variates of poplar. Originally planted  for matches however that becsme redundant. The woodland is planted so every other tree was sacrificial.    Does anyone know of anyone or companies that would buy large quantities of poplar. As the estate is looking to thin out this woodland.    Any help would be gre

dead sycamore

Hello My first post to the world of tree people and tree artists all and I would like your advice please.   I trimmed the sycamore in the photo about June last year just before the drought and it reacted very poorly. Specifically I removed any  dead branches of which there weren't that many of any size. There was a hefty branch that had broken off and I merely removed it without a live cut. I don't think I took off more than about 10-15% in volume. It seemed to react poorly - leav

Current discussions about wood fuel

The UK wood fuel sector is on the rise, driven by its green advantages, energy efficiency, and government incentives. As an eco-friendly and locally sourced heating solution, it's worth considering for a greener and cost-effective future.   What do you think the future holds for the wood fuel sector in the UK?

Coriolopsis gallica

Seems to be the season for Coriolopsis gallica. This is a tier of brackets on a living Prunus padus street tree in Hackney. It took me a while to get to the ID since I associate Coriolopsis gallica with deadwood and ash. It is also fruiting in nearby Clissold park on a huge ash log. @treeruss

Compact Bulldog Bone

It is an exciting time for tree climbers.  Equipment and techniques are developing to not only promote safe working practices but to allow you to work smarter and not harder.  The working life expectancy of a climber can be prolonged with hopefully less wear and tear being picked up on the way.   One such development in Arb climbing is the use of SRT climbing systems.  SRT has been used for a number of years for canopy access, borrowing ideas and kit from rock climbing, caving etc. Tra

Climbing The Ladder When You're Tired of Climbing Trees

With 20 years' experience in the industry, we are well aware that there comes a time in every climbing arborists' life that being up trees for a living becomes harder.   Often that moment is what pre-empts the conversation we then have with climbers about next steps but it pays to think about this before that moment arrives.    There are several ways that experienced climbers and groundsmen can advance their careers. There are lots of options, whether it's going on to become

Chainsaw carving help

We run a small charity which has acquired a 16 acre sit in Dunblane. The sit is for the enjoyment of all, its a wild area with a number of new paths, woodland and grasses. A few large trees (mainly beeches) have been cut down, and we would like to create some natural seating for people. We thought each of the local schools could take one on a design project with simple motifs etc, we would then like to hit each carved. After speaking to Mike Dempsey, who recommended this site I was wondering if

carving (for) fun

I don't have a garden, or not much of one, and anyway, what there is has no road frontage whatsoever.   However, some friends run a tearooms and keep chickens at a place not too far away that is situated on a country lane that is often used as a 'rat run' to get to a nearby city rather than use the often clogged main route. Over the winter they noticed that a large Leylandii between their car park and the road was showing signs of lifting the car park in strong winds, so it had to come
