Outside storage of logs in bags.

Following on from the video on that new trailed processor did you note the pile of filled log bags stacked up outside.

 

I have 150 tons of fresh felled to process that is still in the woods but have nowhere under cover to store it. Thinking about cutting it up now instead of March/April time.

 

Do many of you stack bags outside and then take them straight to point of delivery maybe 12 months later ?. Do you sheet the pile ?, How does the UV affect the bags ?, what sort of nick are the contents in,

I do excatly that, we cut fresh,split and load bags 2 high and 2 bags wide, with a gap of a meter inbetween rows, rows of 20, this stays outside for a year with old fence panel/tin sheets ontop till about may. then uncover to allow sun(ha ha ha ) to bake them, then deliver ,the bags are on there 3rd yr now and some are ripping when tipping into truck, but three yrs is a good return on about a fiver a bag.

I`m now starting to fill next winters.

I struggled to get my logs dried in the vented 1 cubic mtr bags. I had mould issues. That being said, the split logs are left to season within the wood so don't get as much airflow as I would like.

I ended up using stock fencing cages on pallets. These help the logs season really well and very quickly but are not so easy to deliver to the end user.

last couple of years have left bags out through the winter uncovered, you get some mushrooms on the logs which soon disappear the following summer, then they go into polytunnel for the 2nd winter. we switched to bakers knitted bags last season and we have found some of them splitting after just 8-12 months where previous bags were good for 3+ yrs we actually got rid of some barrow bags in the summer which they supplied 8-9 yrs ago and they were still sound.
