my question is i wish to purchase a stihl 25" bar and chain to run on my ms 390.

i cut hard and sort wood a few times a year. I mainly run a 20" bar. I occasionally need a bigger bar and also want to have a 25" bar.

I want to know what bar is best suited for my type of cutting ie rollmatic E, Duromatic E etc. Iv also read that anything up to 24" in bar length you run standard chain. 28" and above its full skip.

What chain is best suited for 25" bar..?

Your saw will pull the bar but don't go in too hard. You need something with a sprocket nose, ie not a Duromatic, but otherwise it doesn't make much difference to performance. Sugihara are very long lasting, there are Stihl options and Oregon.

Because it exceeds the maximum recommended length for your saw, you may not see options listed, but if you look for bars for an MS440 then these will fit as they have the same bar mount.

Standard chain would be fine - unless you are only cutting very clean wood I would go for a semi-chisel chain such as the Oregon one.

If you want an idea of bars which will fit, you can find a selection here (I am affiliated with this site):

and enter MS440 as the model.

We have a 391 here, and it can not keep up oiling that length of bar for any real length of time. So it is definitely best you use it sparingly. Having said that, what you want is the laminated 25" bar, AKA the Rollomatic "E", which is becoming more and more rare. It is perfect for light duty, and it is also very light itself. In fact, it's likely one of the lightest 25" bars around. The Stihl part # is: 3003 000 5231

Thanks for the helpfull reply guy.

Im only going to use it for rare big tress that need cutting, i mostly run the 20" bar.

I contacted stihl and they emailed me back today, also highlighting not to run the 25" bar all the time.

The bar he recommends is #3003 000 9431 which i can see in my stihl book is Rollomatic ES

Chain #3621 000 0084 Rapid super (RS)

Ill ring Sean or Brendan in Donegans tomorrow.

That will do it. However, you likely would be better off with the laminated Rollomatic E that wyk mentioned - but it may not be currently available?

Another advantage, other than weight, is that particular bar also has the old Stihl oil hole. That is to say, it is capable of flowing more than twice the oil the newer versions will.
