stihl 08s
I've been offered one of these for £100. its good working order, new guide bar(20"), new chain and seems to run well. Is it worth it, and can they be used legally in the workplace? this saw is fitted with a chainbrake so should be h+s compliant.It is a top handle saw, so does that mean It cant be used on the ground? Should I get it? Thanks in advance for any advice.

top handle saw is not suitable for work on the ground and should not be used for that

The chain and bar wont be far short of £100, so buy it if you want it. You cant go wrong.

20" chain and bar will be about 50 quid, i wouldnt bother, to old and really all it is is the old TS350 cut off saw with a chain on, put your 100 quid to a newer piece of kit........just my opinion

I had one once- stevie if you think its on a par with a transit, you must have driven some terrible excuses for transits. I reckon more like on a par with the rustiest zetor on the farm!!!
Put your 100 quid towards a newer bit of kit. |

thanks for your advice, i wont be getting it. i do like the older models though, like the 090, 070 etc... just was wondering what it was like.

I've got an 07S as a firewood saw, the 08 was similar, and I've used one a few times. All the points above about "heavy" and "vibration" are true, and I'd add the noise - we've got used to modern saws which are pretty quiet, the old saws are unbelievably loud. As a nice old piece of kit for a bit of firewood cutting it is great, but I certainly wouldn't want to do a day's work with it. An MS 460 is about half the weight and cuts twice as fast!
On the positive side, burglars can't be bothered to take them, so in my recent break in, they left the 07S. Couldn't lift it probably.... If you want an old saw to sit on the shelf and look nice (and give you a workout at the weekend), then £100 is OK for one in top condition. Ratty ones go for £50 or so. |
