  1. Well, no, but it looks that way.. There is a dead tree near it, but a bit far gone to see if it is the same sort.. You lot would know, but it is beyond me!! john..
  2. I will get some photos.. Not sure what the trees are... Only tree i have never seen with ivy is conifer trees, you know, the sort of christmas tree looking ones. john..
  3. Well, i know of one tree, where you would think that the bottom two thirds were dead. I was going to cut it down actually, but when the top third got its foliage it looked great.. I would imagine that left unchecked the ivy would finish it off completely.. Might be that the tree is dying anyway, no idea, i do not know that much about trees.. Lots of trees on the same site do seem to be struggling though, but no idea why.. Loads have suckers, i believe that is a bad sign?? An a conifer tree has died, well, half of it for no apparent reason.. there is another tree that has some sort of disease, I will get photos as you lot will know what the problem is straight away.. john..
  4. Hi there, I am not a "proper" arb at all, just a sort of amateur i suppose. I am doing my best to look after a badly neglected site of about 60 acres with many many trees, many of which are covered with ivy. The site has been neglected for many years. The ivy has been getting worse the last few years, so i will cut it all back when i have time.. Costs me a lot of time and my own money to do it, not just the ivy i mean, but some things are just worth doing!! I do not know much about this sort of thing, got a job to know one tree from another!! but i do my best!! john..
  5. I think it DOES overwhelm the crown sometimes.. I will try to take some photos where it has done so.. I presume the tree underneath is alive!! john..

  7. Top and bottom of it is that ivy DOES kill and damage trees, and Cambridge JC is trying to investigate the spread of the stuff which seems to have upset the "treehugging" types.. You can GUARANTEE though, that they have not got 4 feet of brambles in THEIR own garden "because insects might like it" nor have they taken all the windows out of their house, as, "birds and bats might like to go in there" Seem very strange to me that you cannot even let a rope rub on a tree, let along spike your way up it, lest you hurt the thing, but it is ok to let ivy strangle it to death?? Weird... john..
  8. I would not do everything up tight, just enough to hold it together.. remember, cast iron might be strong in compression, but it is very weak in tension, you want the thing to be able to move or it will crack.. john..
  9. You must be a mug then mate.. It has nothing to do with DEFRA and DEFRA certainly do not own them either.. As for they look on forums, so what, like i care.. As for you will be reporting people. 1, nothing will happen, and, 2, they will tell the people concerned who it was that reported them, [they have to, data protection act sees to that] so good luck with that one.. john..
  10. I do not believe for one second all this climate change nonsense, but what you say about changes in the way things are managed is exactly correct. It sems that we have been taken over by townie twonks that think the country side looks like it does due to "nature".. There used to be some lovely open spaces near me, but now the council have embraced all this "nature" nonsense [coupled with the sad facts that the average muppet believes this sort of nonsense] what were once lovely areas, more like parkland, indeed one WAS a park, are now more or less inpenetrable thickets, a haven for nothing but brambles.. john..
  11. I just cut through the bases of the stuff if it is going up a tree, Takes a long time to die off, but it does!! On the ground glyphosate would be good though.. What about one of them "Sheen" flame guns??? john..
  12. Yes, perhaps.. It is not something i know much about, tree diseases i mean.. john..
  13. I know of a small one, only about 12 foot high and it looks to have covered the lot, but perhaps ivy only grows to a certain height, maybe 25 foot or so?? No idea really john..
  14. Prevents air and sunlight reaching the tree surface. Needless to say this pemanent dampness and lack of air does not help the tree one bit. Eventually it smothers the entire thing.. Bye bye tree.. Even i know that.. If a tree was designed to grow all covered up, you would see trees growing down mines.. Funny that, not many trees down mines.. Bit like ivy will cover the ground if you let it, to the exclusion of anything else.. In the summer i will take a photo of a tree well known to me. The bottom 2/3rds looks dead to be honest, with the remaining 20 or so feet looking great.. As the ivy spreads and spreads, more and more of the tree will succumb and that will be the end of it.. [only i will remove the ivy soon, that will sort it] Terrible invasive stuff.. john..
  15. How can anyone say ivy does not harm trees?? Of course it does..
  16. No, it is the thin end of the wedge, only you all cannot see it. They are seeking to extend things with the aim of making it illegal to sell ANY wood unless approved by them, to give away ANY wood unless approved by them, and to make the burning of ANY wood not approved by them an offence. You are all going to end up PAYING to dispose of wood, trust me on that, AND, by co-operating, you are just playing into their hands. If you all just forgot about it, NOTHING would happen. We live in a country where the law can be flouted with impunity now. Enforcement is down the the LA, Trust me, the LA have got better things to do and not enough money to go looking at bits of wood.. john..
  17. If everyone on here chipped in a tenner, could not a judicial review be sought?? john..
  18. That is like telling the police when stopped; "I have not got a driving licence, but observe the highway code"...... john..
  19. You will end up, as i stated MUCH earlier, having to pay them to take it.. Wait and see.. john..
  20. Well, for the last week i have been burning wet wood. Burns crap, but i cannot see any smoke coming out of house chimney. I was amazed as i thought there would be loads.. Anyway, i think the tree hugging types LIKE the idea of burning wood, as, it is apparently "carbon neutral" I can see them tring to make it so the ONLY wood you can burn will be their little pellet things.. While i am at it, what sort of prick calls wood "biomass" It is effing wood, get over it.. john..
  21. Let me have a look at my crystal ball a mo.... Ah, it is getting clearer.. Loads of mugs will sign up to this scheme and part with £500 plus the other bills they will get for inspections... It wil be a self sustaining thing, the more mugs, the more money, the more interference [at your expense] Emboldened by their growing "audience" of mugs paying them, they will have the money to bribe mp's to pass laws meaning that ALL wood can only be burnt is it is licenced by them.. [even you burning YOUR wood on YOUR fire at home] Now, all you arb types, will find that you have to either; 1, Pay a fortune to dump wood at the local tip. 2, Find that you have to take it to the people that make the wood pellet things, pay THEM to take it off you, and they will sell it at VAST expense to their customers.. There will only be ONE loser.. You lot.. NOBODY will buy your wood just because it says "woodsure" or whatever on it. They will buy what is cheapest from pikeys on Facebook. Do you think the woodsure lot will go to pikey camps??? What do you think... Just ignore them and it will all die the death. They are like the telly licence people, all threats no action.. [trust me on that]] john..
  22. Thing is, they are not, the mostly do not care.. Look at the amount of electrical stuff you see for sale on facebook and ebay that does not and never will have a CE mark and so is illegal to sell. Does not stop people buying it though. I only want quality stuff and do not mind he extra price [cheaper in the long run] but many people, all they want is NEW and cheap.. john..
  23. Not sure about the first bit... Take the other scams, The only one most people have heard of is "CORGI" and they went and changed their name.. As for the other scams, NICEIC, ELECSA, etc etc, mr average punter could not care a crap about "part P" and is not in the least interested in certificates. All they want is it works and it is cheap.. You sell you wood at the right price and they will not care about anything else.. That is the way of the world. Why do you think people buy chinese shit??? All they care about is price, nothing else.. john..
  24. It is all a money making scam for the government and their friends. It is obvious that they want everyone to be forced to use electricity for EVERYTHING so as to make more money for their foreign friends [since it is all foreign owned] and what when the north sea gas runs out..?? Just get on with your lives, sell what ever you can to earn a living [there will be plenty of buyers] and ignore them. You do realise that the more people that pander to these idiots and pay them the £500 the worse it will get??? If NOBODY paid the £500 they would close down in a week and that would be the end of the matter.. You do realise that the people meant to enforce it all, trading standards, will not be interested?? They have not the money to go messing about with bits of wood john..
  25. Yes, one thing you can be certain of with the law, is once you step in a court you have no idea what will happen. NOTHING is set in stone with a judge, there might be established case law, but they can choose to ignore this, there is a word for it, but it escapes me right now.. HOWEVER, you can guarantee, thet the one thing that a judge will have uppermost in his mind is the bit about "the disease which inflicteth the commonwealth" [the prevention of smoke] This disease blah blah thing comes from Heydon, a case from 1584, so i think it can be taken as well established by now.. You say i missed the "golden rule"... It is the golden rule which establishes that words shall be given their ordinary meaning, hence my bit about "animals" not including unusual things such as lions and tigers.. john..
