Cheers for all the replies everyone ... slatted it is :-) Just in response to some of the other comments, I did think about designing one myself, where I looked at some other examples online I costed out buy the wood and it was no cheapre than buyomg one already built but without the hassle of doing it. I then thought about a pallet log store and even went and picked a load of pallets up for a few quid in their charity box and bought them home but couldn't design my way out of a paper bag if my life depended on it so they're sitting in the garden not knowing what the F to do with them so have gone back to teh origina idea of just buying one or it'll never get done. @ Vedhoggar .... when you say built for customers what would you charge for something like that although you're probably miles away so a bit academic but be interesting to know / compare??

Thinking about buying a log store mainly for seasoning as I can keep about a years supply under a covered sideway, some of them come in a choice of solid or slatted versions, would slatted be better for seasoning or is rainwater likely to get in??

How Often Do You Clean Your Glass / What With??
Witterings replied to Witterings's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
Sunday night I didn't close the vent quite so much and there's not a mark on so that obviously does have a major impact .... I wonder how much difference it makes to the amount of wood you get through. Just in reply to a couple of the other comments ... I use white vinegar mixed 50/50 with distilled water for laptop screens / monitors and works well and undiluted for loads of other things like cleaning taps and shower heads ... it's useful stuff! I would have thought WD40 is flammable??? .. Reason I ask about this as well the stove we got the handles meant to be removable but it's way too sticky and if you're not holding onto it (which you can't do when it's hot) the force would move the stove across the hearth and had thought about giving it a squirt. -

How Often Do You Clean Your Glass / What With??
Witterings replied to Witterings's topic in Log burning stoves and fireplaces
I've definitely noticed it builds up if I turn it down / close the vents more ... maybe I'm just doing it too much especially with nights like last night where it's not that cold and you need a bit of heat but cranking it up would be too hot coupled with it uses less wood. I probably turn it down more as teh evening goes on as well, the rooms warmer and I guess the surrounding brickwork is also gvong off heat at that stage. Where do most people set their vents to when it's up and running and not too cold .... about 1/2 way???? -
As per title really ... I'm a stove newbie since October so am still in the honeymoon period and clean the glass every time in between fires with just kitchen towel and water and the majority of the time any residue comes off pretty easily although there have been a few logs that have made quite a mess and left somethig really hard to remove ... almost like they've some chemical in them that stains the glass. I can see the novelty value will wear off at some stage (unless I can convince the Mrs it's a pink job ? ) and won't want to do it every time but for the same token don't want to trash it by not doing it often enough so it becomes really hard to clean and you can't get it all off. Interested to know what others do ... google searching suggests dipping a wet kitchen towel in the ash gets rid of most stuborn stuff ... surprised that doesn't scratch the glass which means the next time residue will get in the scratches making it even harder to get out??

See below UK still 'in containment phase' of virus response WWW.BBC.CO.UK A health chief says measures to slow the spread must be proportionate and warns against panic-buying.

I can't remember which one it was but one of them was bleating on about it as though they had and yet did absolutely nothing hence why I was taking the piss out of it. They should have closed down all the transport links weeks ago but they didn't because they didn't want the impact on the economy and not doing so will now have 5 times greater ampact on the economy .... f**&&-g idiots they are!

I hope their stratedgy for delay is better than their one for containment buecause that's failed dismally within an incredibly short period of time!!

Says to me they're only interested in their bottom line and don't care about anybody or anything else .... personally I'd boycott as a mater of principle and must admit I'm surprised the government aren't placing flight restrictions to badly affected countries like Italy and where a high percentage of cases have been exported from .... especially as they keep banging on about containment whilst not actually doing anything to contain it ... just my 2p's worth. I know of companies in London that are already already doing test "work from home" days to see how it works out and if they need to do any other preparation for when it really kicks in. What do you use to store logs by the fire?
Witterings replied to Rob_the_Sparky's topic in Firewood forum
Looking good ... I nearly did similar with the log store on the outside but I was going to use old weathered railway sleepers either side of the brickwork at the front to creat the "sticky out" bits with a lintel going across the top of them and the front of the fireplace and a shelf running from front to back down each side. Post some pics when you're done with fire fitted and log store full .... I'm sure it'll look amazing!! -
Looking at the Blaze King's own video it says at about 1.18 that it uses 33% less wood, Whilst that's a decent saving it does depend how much more initial as well as maintenance cost might be involved and another video I found says the Cat's cost about £280/300 to replace depending how often that needs doing as that's quite a bit of wood. Whilst the stove we have is enough to heat the bungalow on it's own with all the doors open if you're buying your wood (which probably 95% of UK users do) it's still more expensive to run than the CH. Before we got ours I rang quite a few installers to find out about a system that would do the rads and hot water as well and all of them said they're less popular now than a few years ago because of the massive install cost in comparison combined with you need a 12/15 kw as opposed to a 5 kw so the amount of wood you burn pretty much trebles again making it less efficient than CH and an awfully long time to regain your initial cost. Also as stoves become more and more popular the price of cut seasoned wood is only going to go up. I'd love to find a stove that provides heat more cost effectively than the CH as I love the aesthetics / atmosphere they provide and out of choice would use that everyday instead but until I can find a free (or nearly free) wood supply I'll probably end up remaining in the category of the 95% of other users which is using it 2 /3 times a week in the cold stretches almost as a weekend treat.

What do you use to store logs by the fire?
Witterings replied to Rob_the_Sparky's topic in Firewood forum
Just so you know where I got the idea from I just googled indoor log store and hit images as per link below and scrolled through them all indoor+log+store+ideas - Google Search WWW.GOOGLE.COM This was the one I did it closest to Image: wood under TV | Wood store, Log store indoor, Firewood storage WWW.GOOGLE.COM Found on Google from pinterest.com Just for info, it does keep the loose debris in as well, you can see I put a "border" on the bottom / to the side and generally push the logs back so they're just behind the border which I'm sure helps retain most of the bits. I've subsequently put a divider down the middle behind the main strut just for better "rotation" of what's driest and when one sides empty just stick the pointy bit of the hoover in to suck up anything from the floor. The other thing I love about it, the wires that came out of the stereo that was previously standing on a unit were everywhere and a complete freaking mess. The shelf is 2 boards deep and then a 60mm strip at the rear which is enough to get a UK plug down through. I decided where I wanted the stereo etc. placed and pulled all the wires together with a big re-usable zip tie and then cut the strip to the correct size either side of the wires and put it back on with some supports coming from underneath with "retainers" to stop them moving. Lastly I got some hardboard and placed it as a false back painted in the same wood dye, made a cut in the middle and secured both pieces held in place with a couple of kitchen door magnets, drilled 2 holes and put a quality bit of 3/4mm rope from a chandlers through them to create a loop ... something to get hold of so I can pull it off the magnets and slide one of the pieces to the side to easily access the wall plugs / wiring behind. It's transformed an area that looked like a bombsite to being a feature instead whilst serving 2 useful purposes for very little money .... in relative terms. Anyway hope either that or some of the links I provided are of help. -
What do you use to store logs by the fire?
Witterings replied to Rob_the_Sparky's topic in Firewood forum
Built myself a log store which also couples as shelving, it's made out of cheap scaffolding type board and then just some wood dye and have a small basket on the shelf with firelighters / kindling. -
Mark Hi, Cheers for that but if they're these and you say the waist is 36" (guessing that means the 34-38") it shows the inside leg as 32.5" which is way too big. If you were down the road I'd say maybe they were worth at least trying but unfortunately you're not but thanks anyway. Interesting to see the more recent comments combined with ....... whilst my logs were delivered seasoned they've been getting dryer and dryer which also seems to have helped but a couple of other things I've noticed which goes in line with what others have said ... "You'll learn what your fire's like over time". I watched one manufacturers video that suggested all the logs should be placed parrallel from front to back in a row so did this for quite a few evenigs .... I find this leaves all of the logs lying on a bed of embers with no air able to get underneath then which kills half the flame ... get a poker move them around and they come to life so personally I'd call BS on that. The other is how much the wind affects it / the draw on the flue, lots of wind just seems to want to burn like crazy so you seem to need to choke it more .... last couple of evenings virtually no wind and it just ticks away beautifully with the vent half open. Almost to the extent you wonder if the top of the flue could do with something to shield it from high winds. Whatever it is though I much prefer it to the central heating ?

Think I fall into the same category so they may br my best bet. Happy New Year to you as well and everyone else on here. I looked up what info I could on them and think the leg would be way too long but thank you for the offer.

Let me know what size they are and I may be interested ... the below will tell you if they may fit or not. OK ... so as I type this I'm wearing a 34" waist pair of M&S jeans that I think are on the genorous side as if I don't keep the belt cranked right in I'll look like a student with them hanging on my ankles which would't be a pretty site and most of my trousers as a 36" waist so put these on my Xmas list .... 35/37" Oregon Yukon Chainsaw Trousers Black / Orange 35-37" (88-93cm) Waist 30" (76cm) Leg | Chainsaw Trousers | Screwfix.com WWW.SCREWFIX.COM Order online at Screwfix.com. As there was no way the 2 halves were ever going to meet without a vheese cutter being onvolved took them back and changed them for the 38/39" waist and whilst I can get them on .... feels like they are the cheese cuter to do so and qiuite a few of the reviews say they come up small so they're going back as well especially as I've 2"'s of unwanted material waiting to trip me up on the leg, Does anyone happen to know if the Husky ones come up "truer" to size ... I've tried googling leg length and you can't find it anywhere Husqvarna Classic Protective Trousers - World of Power WWW.WORLDOFPOWER.CO.UK Husqvarna occasional use chainsaw trousers with class 1 type A protection. Bit of an afterthought but why don't people like chaps as opposed to trousers??
