  1. My first saw was a Mac Cat from Machine Mart in about 1990, it was junk from the day I bought it, but I never really looked after it. I bought a Stihl MS170 to replace it ten years ago and wish I'd bought one as my first saw, I only run it on Aspen and its proved to be a handy little logging saw, still one of my faves in the collection.
  2. A Jonsered 2045 that drips oil everywhere. I'm going to replace the rubber oil guide and see if that makes a difference.
  3. Hi, I've just been tinkering with a McCulloch 838 and noticed than when I pump the primer the bulb doesn't fill with fuel and it seems to pressurise the tank causing the fuel to 'splutter' out of the vent in the middle of the filler cap. I presume this means the primer ain't working correctly? Are they easy to get hold of? Cheers
  4. Although I've got other saws of different sizes; Husky, Jons, Partner etc, my 'go to' saw for handiness; light pruning, slicing pallets, fencing, felling small saplings etc is the MS170. I paid £150 about eight years ago, they're not much more now. I run it on Aspen as I'm only an occasional user and need to be able to start it after six months of not using it.
  5. I've had a Stihl MS170 that I use for occasional light pruning on the ground, I run it on Aspen and have had no issues in the 8 years I've had it.
  6. I sold a non runner on eBay about 5 yrs ago for 40 quid, not interested in using it without a chain brake. In hindsight I should have kept it for the pull starter, carb etc for repairing/rebuilding TS350 'whizzers'
  7. Hmmm, or is it a Power Mac 380 ???
  8. Does anyone know if it is the same as any other makes, e.g. 'badge-engineered' ?
  9. Agreed lurkalot, it is a McCulloch PM370. That's the easy bit! Now to try and get it running!
  10. My mate gave me this earlier, any clues as to what it is? Electrolux era McCulloch?
  11. Thanks for the replies, I'd only encountered them on ancient dumper trucks and XL500 m/c What Makita saw uses the same cyl etc, is there one? I rebuilt one of them this afternoon and got it to fire with a half decent piston in it, I'll try filling the tank tomorrow and goading some fuel through the carb
  12. Thanks for that, what's the procedure for starting an engine with a decompression button, forgive my ignorance but none of my other items have one. Cheers
  13. I know a compression test on a two stroke can reveal only limited info but I assume it's a starting point with regard to piston/ring/cylinder condition. I have a few Makita DPC 6400 lying round (forgive me, I know they're not chainsaws!). Do I press the blue button IN or pull it OUT to attempt a compression test? I'm going to attempt to build a good one from the pile and want to select a goodish one to start with. Comments much appreciated.

Hmmm, replaced the piston as the other was showing massive signs of blow by and was singed brown below the ring. But still only running on choke, no splits in the induction tube so back to the drawing board....

    Unknown saw

"A man walks into a chainsaw shop..." Seriously! A fella brought one of these into my local chainsaw shop last Sat, it had a Dolmar label on but it was a Poulan badged as Dolmar.
  16. My first saw was a Mac Cat from Machine Mart in 1990, I didn't look after it and it only lasted 15 years. I learned a lot about caring for all my saws after that though!

Hi bmp01 The a Partner distracted me!! I'm going to take the pot off at the weekend. When I looked through the exhaust port there were some marks on the piston skirt, probably worse than I was thinking. I reckon it needs a new piston. All shall be revealed! Cheers
  18. Always difficult buying off a friend, a low offer could spoil the friendship, a high price demanded could cause resentment!
  19. What sort of use had it had? Has he used it professionally or is he an occasional logger? Why is he getting rid?
  20. Hi Where is the best place to get a piston for my Makita DCS430? Is it the same engine as a Dolmar PS43? Cheers

    Tuning?

peatff, I had to keep one hand on the throttle slightly to get it to start. I'll watch the video and give it another go. I can do most repairs to small engines but carbs still give me trouble. I let it warm up then set the tickover screw (T), I then adjust the low speed screw (L) until it ran smooth then I adjusted the high speed screw (H) to get it running smooth at the top end. Is this the right sort of approach?

    Tuning?

Thanks, I forgot about the educational aspect of YouTube.

    Tuning?

Hi, could anyone signpost me to a simple online explanation of setting a carb up. I've reassembled a Partner 550 and although it's now running, the carb settings need adjusting as its a bit reluctant to start without some throttle. Cheers

    Partner 550

I picked it up today, very good spark and loads of compression, no casing damage either. I'll have a play with it tomorrow starting with clean filters and new fuel.
