  3. Hello all, It would be interesting to see if anybody is in a similar position or has any advice. It is no secret that work has slowed down for a lot of tree companies across the country including us. We are a small business (5 full time employees and use several subbies). We usually run as 2 teams and have more than enough kit to do so. The last 4-8 weeks things have slowed down and we are now just running one team which has us on the line of breaking even. To make the business more profitable short term would be to cut some overheads and maybe lay 1 or 2 staff off which I really don't want to but also there is only so long we can operate as we are. Financially we are ok so I am not to worried yet, I am working on things I don't usually have the time to such as compliance, website, marketing plans etc so there are some benefits. I am trying to drive it forward but at the moment feels like a race to the bottom. It would be interesting to see if anybody else is in a similar position and if so, how they plan to navigate through the quiet spell. (If its down tools and go to boozer I'm in!) 😆

  7. Hello! Thinking of purchasing a single or king cab Hilux and would need to have a chip box/tipper conversion doing. Does anybody know of any companies north west based who I could contact for a quote? We are based in Wigan so the closer the better but obviously don't mind travelling for the right the company. Thanks! Conor.
  8. I have just put my "full time subby" on the books and taken a new guy on as an employee also, I am only about 6 weeks into it but to be honest finding it less stressful and a little more structured. One is on a no hours contract as he likes the flexibility as do I and the other (who I plan to train up to do admin/quotes/maintenance etc) is on a 45 hour week contract so if a day falls through for some reason he can shadow me and help out etc with the background stuff. So far so good, it adds more structure to your business and the lads know they are turning in every day regardless. As for time off, I am away in 2 weeks for a few days and have pencilled quite straight forward days in for them. Just make sure you can trust them and you will be onto a winner. Also I was nervous, made me ill for a week taking the second guy on but that's what its all about! What was once scary soon becomes the new normal! Good luck!

Good rates of pay for the right candinate. 75% Domestic work, 25% Commercial with new up to date kit including skid steer to save carrying logs. Must haves: A friendly + positive attitude. Good work ethic. Relevant certs (Cs30+31+38+39) + Chipper. Transport to the yard (Wigan). Drop me an email if interested to [email protected] or call/message 07592 052 427 to discuss. Thanks. Conor. 10. I am a small company based in Wigan and looking for another climber/all rounder to come in on a sub-contractor basis once/twice a week to help us out. Most work is within a 25 mile radius from Wigan. Good rates of pay for the right person, will cover fuel costs & time for travelling. The majority of the work is domestic, Ideally looking for somebody with a drivers licence, trailer licence and over 25 (Covered on the truck insurance) however this is not critical. Must have: A friendly + positive attitude (especially with clients) Don't mind getting wet Relevant certs (Cs30+31+38+39) Own PPE + Climbing kit Transport to the yard. We have small but new and up to date kit and always go for the most efficient way of getting the job done (because I don't like carrying logs as much as the next person ??) Drop me an email if interested to [email protected] Thanks. Conor.
  11. I had the same issue but only realised in October that I had passed the threshold in June. I had 2 months work pencilled in that I had quoted for (with no VAT added). I contacted the commercial clients and schools etc (only around 25% of the work that was booked in) and took the hit myself on the rest. I didn't feel comfortable ringing back clients that had accepted a quote and then adding the VAT to it due to my own fault. I had to backdate the VAT for the 4 previous months too which I had done the work but didn't charge VAT. Luckily I had purchased some new machinery so somehow I ended up getting refund but I did loose a couple of nights sleep before the accountant called with the good news. Definitely get a good accountant! The bill you get from them will be a fraction of what they save you in tax/VAT.
  12. I'm 2 years in as a business owner and have learned this year that managing yourself is as hard as managing your company. Once you get busy don't run yourself into the ground, you would be surprised how quickly you get fatigued and less efficient. The days of just having to deal with just getting a tree on the ground safely will be gone as the majority of the time you are in the tree you will be thinking "I need to call back Mr Smith or Shit I never sent that email to the council". If you market your company well and sell yourself well then you won't have any problems bringing the work in. Be very friendly/polite when quoting, not overly formal but also concise and to the point. It's a skill to read the customer within the first 10 seconds to figure out what approach is best to deal with them. Every quote is a 5 minute interview and you will walk away from some really confident and others feeling like you didn't perform well. When you do 15-20 quotes a week aswell as climbing every day and sending emails until 9pm scheduling work it soon takes its toll. These are problems you dream of having when first setting up but they soon come around. This isn't trying to put you off, overall I love running my own company but there are times when you want to switch it off (which you can't). Best of luck whatever you plan to do! Also some other advice from my short experience - Live on the bare minimum and keep re-investing. Charge a good but fair price for the work. Be organised. Book in time off. Buy good/reliable equipment (if possible) You can have the best website in the world but if nobody see's it then its a waste, market well.
  13. Yep another vouch for FSI here, the B22 is great. Self driven and only ever had one job I couldn't do due to access in 2 years. It's been through a few customers kitchens/hallways to! Can drive onto a tipper with ramps too.
  14. Been a manic year for us, our second year running and got 1 spare week to fill in mid December and that's this year booked up. It's tough to gauge if we have done something right or the rona has just made the industry thrive. It's hard to make any business decisions in terms of buying new equipment or expanding because we don't know what is around the corner. On the other hand I think we are in quite a resilient industry when it comes down to it. Don't overstretch, keep a few pennies in the bank and I think most with muddle through
