+1 for Yale Blue tongue, was tempted to get one of the Yale poison ivy calamine/poison ivy tropical but hardly anyone over here supplies the tropical so went with Blue tongue, Had my ZZ for 5 months now, (Christmas present from the GF) no cracks/dents or any damage great piece of kit, just a shame it wasnt made for 14mm max that way 13mm would run smoooth and it would be thicker metal then thinking about using it with a pulley saver as I'm just using it over branches since I hate using cambium savers (yes I get them stuck.. alot) Jay

Any splicers in Merseyside that could help?

I will try to ask around boating places, but its would they be able to splice plaited rope? I can splice 3 strand easily to make anything but i dont have the tools for plaited rope - Jay -
Hi guys looking for a splicer in the northwest preferably merseyside My friend has a Yale Polydyne multi-sling 19mm x 5m, he nicked it with his saw about 1m from the loopless end. Cheers gentlemen, That has given me some relief, there's me sweating my ass off in C's I know insurance wise you just have to declare that you're using A's in your risk assessment and why (too hot etc) Thank you again good sirs I can now pass on my Hiflex to my girlfriend as a nice warm set of trousers - Jay

I've always worn type C Stihl Hiflex for climbing no matter what the weather as they're the only CS trousers I have, but now its that time to buy a new pair of trousers but I fancied a change and really like the Husky tech extreme, but they only do them in type A.. So my question is do many of you climb with Type A trousers? I'm 100% confident in my saw work and always keep my legs out of the way but its one of them, "the one time you dont, it will get you" situations with going to type A Cheers - Jay

For anyone using a ZigZag you may use blue tongue or Yale Poison Ivy/Hivy/Calamine versions, I was about to buy the Calamine (pink) version as its that little bit easier to see than the Ivy and Hivy or blue tongue, but I never knew there was a Poison Ivy tropical version till now, and in 11.7mm!! http://www.sherrilltree.com/Tropical-Ivy-Climbing-Rope#.VRrbn_nF-3o - Jay

Who says i said it was rock climbing experience, you'll actually find I was taught from a young age by my uncle whos a royal marine, how to use Drt with prusiks, by the age of 10 I bought my own gear with my own money, im definitely not one of those arb students that mummy and daddy bought a brand new tree motion harness and protos helmet.. everything i own i have personally saved for, and trained on till i know it/set it up/tie it/start it/ without fault - jay

Yep Im 20, boss seems to think PPE is a set of grippy gloves, glasses and steel toes.. Thing is if I didnt bring my own gear in the jobs wouldnt get done, there is another climber but he brings his in too, im trying to get out because theres just so much wrong with the place, chipper doesnt even have a working emergency stop, and other lads with no tickets an no chainy pants are using saws despite me saying not too! I may be young but I certainly know that its not right like that

If you think you are underpaid.. I'm currently on £5.13 (min wage) bringing in my own equipment to work (PPE, climbing equipment, saws, rigging equipment) I personally funded my courses as my boss refused when i asked could i do them, and i have 10 years climbing experience but 1 year in the arb industry, talk about not being appreciated!! Having to do private work on my days off just to pay for bills, so i hardly get to see or have time to care for my girlfriend who is very ill and struggling with anorexia Oh yea looking for a new job in the Merseyside (Wirral/Cheshire) area, have CS30/31/38/39 and a full UK driving licence too with no points - Jay

looking for a new job around the cheshire or wirral area, I personally funded my CS30/31/38/39 courses as my boss refused, have 10 years of climbing experience but 1 year in the tree surgery industry, Have my own climbing equipment, rigging equipment, PPE, saws: MS361, MS181. Currently on £5.13 and I feel unable to progress in my current employment position, and not being appreciated while bringing in my own equipment and PPE for the company. - Jay

Had a little chat with him in private today, I don't necessarily mind the eagerness as I am willing to teach him and I have done so with a few things, it was the fact that he changed the setup of the rig which has concerned me. Had a little chat about what his career path is for the future too, doesn't seem to want to do his CS courses, yet wants to grab a saw at every opportunity, I wont allow him to use one until he's qualified, just that every time I have seen him pick up the saw he hasn't got chainsaw pants on either Hahaha I don't know what is better there mate, maybe the one that is still in bed? Will see how things go for the future and try to help him even more. Wish me luck! - Jay

Had a few incidents today when taking down some poplars, due to a groundy, you know the one, always eager to just pick up a saw, or just pull on that rope, takes shortcuts, doesn't listen when it comes to teamwork. got all the brash off and our climber put the rigging rope and pulleys up, it was the first time in a while the RC2000 was to be brought out the bag, I'm the only one trained to use the rigging gear and take charge when doing so. I walked over to grab the gear and he runs over, grabs the bag and runs to the tree to set it up, ends up setting it upside down, so I tell him how its done and show him the right way, after several limbs lowered safely, I set the rope ready for the next limb, as I walked the rope back I could see that he stayed to look at the setup, he then came to hold the rope with me and it was only until the limb was cut and that the rope didn't feed through that I had to put myself in the danger area and go to see the device, It became apparent that he removed the rope from the back of the device which caused it to slide forward along the barrel and pinch the other turns. It was an intimidating feeling to say the least being stood under a limb weighing around half a tonne, trying to get the rope to feed through. Thought it best not to say too much to him for I may have lost my temper with him, so will have some calm but stern and serious words with him in the morning!

Hi mate when and where are you taking yours? im at Reaseheath on the 2/2/15 - 5/2/15 Also they will teach you the way to do it all so dont worry, you have a choice of how to do it, someone will climb, you can ask them to put up a second line as a safety line if you wish, or you can wait for them to have the "accident" then use whatever tools you have to get up there and help them, or throw line and then ascend you way up (you wont be marked down for asking the climber to add a back-up rope, this just shows you are being cautious day to day + its easier) as it will be done as if you are a groundy first part of the course is about the climbing, how to limb walk, rigging point for your main line, all the basics, then you will get taught about the rescue side, bit of first aid, dealing with trauma wounds, then how to attach them to you and how to get them down the safest way, just remember if you are gonna take something off, always put something on first, always make sure they or you are connected by atleast 2 points at all times during the rescue Most of my knowledge of rescues comes from a Coastguard cliff rescue past, its slightly different in the arb world but in general its the same - Jay
