  1. It looks worse than it did last week. I've had a bit of a read about Anthracnose and Armillaria and it doesn't look too promising for the tree. Not sure what to recommend, apart from fell it, burn it, and plant a couple of oaks.
  2. I had another look at this, and found white strands under the bark at the base of the tree, and some fruiting bodies on a recently deceased twig that was growing about 6 foot from the ground off the trunk.
  3. If only it was as simple as all that.
  4. Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look under the bark tomorrow.
  5. This is in the in-laws garden. It was looking healthy last year, but this year it seems to be dying back. Some of the bark around the base has cracked a bit, and sounds dead when I tap it. I removed a lot of ivy and weeds from around the base after the photos. I'm going back tomorrow to have a proper look, and maybe have a climb and cut out all the dead bits. Any advice appreciated, thanks
  6. I've got a Makita DCS3400TH, so light compared to others, although not so robust. Had mine for about 7 years now and not needed to buy any spare parts yet, only chains and a bar.
  7. It's a big leech.
  8. Found these little beasties under the gravel by my woodshed.
  9. Looks like converted underground carriages.
  10. I was told the beetles usually fly around 10 metres up, so any elm less than 10m has a better chance. Can anyone confirm this?
  11. My old Mountfield Empress seems to run better when I use 50:1 Another newer Mountfield I have seems to run a little slower and smokier with 50:1
  12. Into a container, on a ship and out of the country.
  13. Sounds like the clutch springs aren't doing their job. Stretched or broken maybe. You have to take the main sprocket off, to see it, think it's just a split ring holding it on, if my memory serves my right. Worth replacing the sprocket too usually if you need to change clutch IMO.
  14. I searched the internet for ages before posting here, then I found the 'show us your galls' thread, which made me have a closer look
  15. I just found a small larva inside, and have now identified the cause as Hawthorn Button Top Gall Midge. Pests and Deseases: show Apparently it's quite common, first time I've seen it. I'll give it a cut tomorrow and have a bonfire, that should get rid of them
  16. Noticed this odd new growth on a patch of my hawthorn hedge. I cut this part of the hedge back to about half it's height, from about 6' to 3' early this year, as it was very thin at the bottom and I wanted to let more light in to encourage new growth. It seemed to work as there is plenty of new growth, but the new growth on some of the hawthorns is abnormal. My first thought was fasciation, but I'm not convinced. Hoping someone here has some ideas. I can take more pics if needed.
  17. We had flying ants coming out of a gap in the skirting board in our kitchen last year. I hoovered them up and emptied them at the bottom of the garden.
