  1. OK, you asked for it: Alder (a lot of them not doing anything yet): Field maple (this was a surprise as it was a particularly weedy little whip that went in and it seems to be the only one that has come into leaf): Some of the wild seeded willow (think it's grey willow but might be cricket bat): Spindle (only one I could find in leaf): Wild cherry - going great guns - they're all like this: Think this is crab apple: Hazel all doing well, although leaves still tucked up in the buds: Common hawthorn, this is all thriving: Blackthorn, scarecely off the mark and this was about the most advanced I could find: Hornbeam: As I mentioned, the oak and beech are still dormant but so are the big trees so not too worried. Aspen is doing nothing, which surprises me as I thought it was a pioneer plant
  2. Bit more sunshine over there!
  3. Well, a few weeks on and the cherry is looking splendid. The hazel is all doing well, the hornbeam is coming into leaf. The alder is being quite slow but the oaks & beech still look like dead twigs. Aspen hasn't budged either. Hawthorn doing well and I think blackthorn is coming up too. Not sure about the rest as I didn't label them...
  4. ...do it yourself Paid some lads to plant some of my trees last month. Been inspecting some of the area and it's amazing how many have tubes upside-down or whips caught in the cable ties. Also found quite a few unplanted ones, which I've stuck in the ground but don't hold out much hope for.
  5. Yes, there are... I'm hoping some deer do come in (for the first thing you mentioned!)
  6. Stihl? No Husqvarna? No Jonsered? No This is the best chainsaw in the world... LiveLeak.com - Need a chainsaw?
  7. I got a free Esse range (oil burner). Going to convert it into a rocket stove mass heater as cutting a hatch through the boiler isn't practical
  8. I think shooting will help a bit! It's going to be a while before they get big enough to poke out the top of the tubes anyway but we don't get many deer here, probably because of all the dogs
  9. Just been inspecting some of the plantings today. Found a few where the tree had been cable tied to the stake by accident and one upside down one but nice to see some leaves appearing, especially on the cherries. Nothing else doing much at the moment but then most of the mature trees are still asleep so not too worried Glorious out there this morning!
  10. Got a free chip tip site near Heathfield (South of TW) if anyone is interested?
  11. Thanks - I just hope the roots don't rot as some of the ground was pretty wet. I think the alder should be OK but we'll have to see about some of the others. At least they won't die from lack of watering!
  12. I don't know if English Woodlands carry them (I doubt it). If you want the seeds just let me know - I've got about 50, I think
  13. No problem. Picked them up in the Dominican Republic, might try to germinate them myself
  14. Had a sprig of mistletoe left over from Christmas. Remarkably, it was still green and the berries were moist & sticky. I've smeared them onto some apple trees so fingers crossed we'll have a supply in a few years! :fc:
  15. It was covered in brown leaves during the summer when every other tree was in full leaf. That said, it was green inside when I cut it down so might have been alive. It might sprout from the cambium but we wanted to put a trampoline there anyway so it had to go The 1,500+ trees I've planted in it's place have assuaged my conscience.
  16. It was nearly a week! It was lovely to wake up this morning not having to plant trees. Put the 3 remaining shrubs in and corrected a few misplanted trees
  17. I just wondered if it might get drawn up into the roots
  18. I've tried but not sure whether it worked. Which trees are best?
  19. Although I'm not entirely up to speed with the hilarious running joke, could someone please confirm whether the tree was indeed a beech as first stated, or a hornbeam?
