  1. I suggest starting with a very simple website layout... as you are beginning it may be best to have a single homepage and a link to a contact page for email & phone. Drop the testimonial page as you don't have any. The photos look awful. Remember the saying *photos say a thousand words* If you use crap photos (especially when starting out) people will think that is what you are offering; a crap service!... a crap job! Best not to sell anything before you can actually deliver the goods. Hope this helps, cheers, steve
  2. Wet, windy and cold here in Pembrokeshire. I don't mind dealing with all those elements of weather individually.... but when they all come together it's glum.
  3. Thankyou chaps - that's really helpful. I'm not needing one urgently so will wait for a used Tirfor 1.6t to turn up.
  4. Thanks. Would you say it's worth spending the extra for a Tirfor? (they cost quite a bit more).
  5. Yep, I trialed the same idea a while ago. Made it out of an old farm gate. It's very handy for tight spaces and lugging things around, but 'd say it's far more useful to fit a towball to the dozer blade and use a single axle trailer.
  6. Re-gurgitating this thread.... the ACE winches still seem good value for money. Anyone had any problems with them? I'm thinking of ordering one. cheers
  7. Yep, that would save another £25 billion (plus the £2 to £2.4 billion annual running costs).
  8. We have a bunch of sitka to fell and we've been thinking of converting them into seasoned firewood. From the comments it appears that's a best plan. cheers, Steve
  9. *steve thinks about giving some kind of response* ...and leaves it there.
  10. I agree to an extent - keeping in mind that the Glastir money is drawn back from the EU. To stop that means leaving the EU and that won't happen over night in any party. £55 billion of tax per year lost in non-payment, fraud and/or errors (fiddling). Another way to substantially lower that debt is to put a stop to extortionate salaries & expenses in the public sector.... eg, Council Chief Executives being paid more than the Prime Minister. There is also a massive self-interest in the NHS from many of our politicians.... and Lords. Who is paying for that? ....we do! It doesn't take long to wipe out that debt if you look in the right places.
  11. The money comes from the EU, general taxation goes into the EU even if we don't claim any back. So are you suggesting we leave the EU?.... sounds like you support UKIP. (oh dear)! Couldn't give a monkeys if they want to checkup on what we're doing as we'd be doing all this stuff anyway.... it just happens we get to do what we would like to do PLUS get paid something towards it. It's simple mathematics. Would you prefer those admin jobs (paid via the EU) to disappear so they can increase the debt burden via unemployment, etc?
  12. We get £25 per box and we're contracted to put up 50... so that's £1250 total. That amount also includes cleaning out/ checking the boxes once per year (over 5 years). The Glastir money all comes from the EU. So would you rather UKGov pays millions in to the EU and nothing coming back?
  13. Bat boxes, owl boxes, bird boxes, squirrel traps, creating wildlife pond, coppicing, native tree planting, leaving meadows ungrazed at specific times of year..... Nothing to do with conservation?
  14. We kept the weather in mind with the jobs we signed up for so we shouldn't face any problems like you've found, in theory, hopefully! eg, we decided to drop a couple acres of holly/ brash removal in a particularly wet/boggy area of our woodland. But that is only because Glastir Woodland Management wouldn't agree to paying for ANY ditch clearance work. We'd rather tackle something like that in our own time. We haven't noticed any odd requests.... and I think using soft nails for mounting bird, bat and owl boxes makes sense.
  15. Thanks for all info above, really helpful. We're going ahead with the barn build in January 2015.... to be made out of Larch for the main A-frames and with waney edge Larch cladding. The front posts & braces for the exposed overhang will be made from oak.... I've found a few straight oaks on our farm that look like a suitable diameter but just been reading up about oak species to try and identify which ones they are.... to realise there are only 600 species to choose from!! Haha! I've read that Turkey oak is a bad one to use due to warping & splitting when seasoning, so I need to make sure they aren't Turkey oak. Are there any other oak species to avoid for construction purposes? See the basic plan below Cheers, steve
  16. Dust by the looks of the video. Also found these ones made from potato starch.... which I prefer, and they're cheaper: Biodegradable Tree Spiral - Brilliant Little Planet
  17. Well, we decided to go for it - took quite a bit of fine tuning and sending things backwards & forwards but quite happy with it all now. Have already signed up to the Glastir Entry & Glastir Advanced and we'll soon be signing up to Glastir Woodland Management too. Currently making 20 bird boxes to go up before xmas.
  18. The Tubex 12d looks good Typical prices here: http://www.green-tech.co.uk/Tubex-12D-tree-shelters/
  19. Petition · Abolish "Road fuel duty" on Garden/Power tool specific Alkylate petrols designed to protect users from harmful emissions · Change.org
  20. If you sign the petition your question may be answered
  21. Haha! I really like that idea
  22. My predictions rings true so far. People are already being flooded again, some buildings are just after being repaired from the last winter rain: BBC News - Flooding in Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion after downpours
  23. If you're using silver-foil backed foam insulation the Celotex data sheets are really handy as it will show you all the materials & dimensions. Need to register an account to see them: Celotex - UK PIR Thermal Insulation Manufacturers
  24. Saying that I chatted with Knauf tech dept about using their Polyfoam for roof insulation and they said it's fine for that BUT very important that it's butted right up next to breather membrane otherwise there would be an interstitial condensation problem! I'd go with whatever the manufacturers recommend.
  25. Interesting, which make of membrane is that? Cheers, Steve
