  1. I've taken photos of the buds from the three oak trees.... Is this Turkey Oak? Tree number one/ Photo number one:
  2. Here's an example why the Chief Vetinary Officer should be in tune with the impacts of Climate Change: http://www.liv.ac.uk/media/livacuk/climate-research/docs/vanDijk_Baylis.pdf
  3. Yep. Being serious.
  4. I think Natalie speaks complete sense on this. It's sickening how we end up with people in a position of power like climate denier & fool Owen Paterson (ex Secretary of State for the Environment). You're welcome to post it on a free speech thread, if you like
  5. I find economics confusing; which is probably how they like it One thing for sure is that the increasingly rich/ poor gap is causing major problems in society.... when it gets to the point where ordinary people (some of which work their arses off) are having to resort to food banks something has clearly gone very wrong. I'm not saying people don't deserve bonus' for doing a great job.... but it's the shear scale of bonus that is wrong. Footballers get paid far too much.... but it could be a great help if they were taxed at 80%
  6. Let's not forget how much we're being ripped off by major corporations not paying taxes, bankers bonus's, trident, high speed rail, private finance initiatives (building schools & hospitals), unecessary new roads, NHS privatisation, low wage economy (zero hours, etc), senior chief executive (public sector pen pushers) salaries have doubled in the past 6 years ....etc, etc! There is plenty of money to be had if you look in the right places. The total austerity package brought in by the coalition is about the same as bankers bonus's paid in the same period (£80 billion ish I think?). That's where a lot of the money comes from cheers
  7. I agree, clarification is needed on a lot of the policy section and they are definitely aware of this. Members are regularly pointing things out and they are working on it. The website went down today due to the amount of visitors/ people signing up!
  8. Not out.... but: MC413 With regard to recreational fishing, the Green Party will seek to end the practice known as 'live baiting' (where live fish are used as bait for other fish) as soon as possible. Barbed hooks and double and triple hooks will also be banned, because of the damage and distress caused to fish by their use. No barbed hooks!.... *steve gulps* Errr, work in progress!
  9. Yes, I read about them hybriding with other oak varieties. There's a good chance that has happened as there are quite a few much bigger oaks in the same area. So I guess the leaf pattern may not be a good identifier. Is a bugger because I wanted to use it for the main supports at the front of our barn.... and they will be exposed to the weather so I think I'll need to try for another one.
  10. I'll have a look at that too and take a photo. cheers
  11. Doh! Good idea on looking at the leaves on the deck, that didn't even cross my mind! May have to rummage quite a bit though as this one was overstood by much bigger oaks. cheers
  12. Yes you are right - it is a different sentence.... I think that needs to be written clearer. Cheers, I'll point it out. The policy was last updated in 1990 and I know they are working hard to fine tune it all/ as we speak.... but I imagine it will take time due to the amount of policy in place. It'll be good to see the policy progress with the recent increase in members as I believe it will become more balanced. "except for registered premises" ....so I imagine farmers, woodland owners, pest management companies would need to register themselves.
  13. Yeah, I've read that somewhere. I'm not 100% sure if what I've felled is Quercus cerris though?! Does it have red heartwood?
  14. It says "...for sport or leisure" shooting squirrels, rabbits, etc is pest control. In reality putting all the Green Party policy into place is never going to happen overnight & I think could be quite damaging in certain instances. eg, an outright immediate ban on all pesticides could result in less food (initially), but with time we can ween ourselves off the chemicals as we introduce less mono-culture/ intensive farming and get back to having smaller farms/ local food production.
  15. I felled a couple of oak trees today.... they are about 10" diameter at the base. I'm guessing they are Turkey oak, but not sure. Can anyone confirm from these pics?.... unfortunately I don't have any leaf photos because they all fell off. If it is Turkey oak would it be suitable for milling into floorboards?
  16. If anyone would like to check out Green Party policy check out this web link: the Green Party | Home Out of interest, do all the other parties lay their cards on the table like this? cheers, steve
  17. Haha! Yes I'm sure there is an element of shrinkage at the Lib-Dems.... they've not performed admirably..... and I actuallyvoted Lib-Dem in the last election
  18. Well that didn't take long! The Green Party have now overtaken the Lib-dem membership as well.... so the growth isn't showing any sign of slowing: https://opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/adam-ramsay/green-party-membership-overtakes-lib-dems-and-ukip-here%27s-13-reasons-whyi
  19. Does that include people that have voted for other main stream parties for years & years and recently jumped ship to the Greens? Best not to pigeonhole.
  20. Trouble is; Business as usual isn't working very well (apart from for a small percentage of incredibly rich people at the top). I see we have everything to gain by trying an alternative to what we currently have in place.... or to at minimum to vote for more greener voices in parliament. From what I've seen/ read I wouldn't say the environmental aspects have been forgotten in the Green Party.... but the social aspects are entwined with environmental damage so part of the solution has to be to look at the whole picture.
  21. I don't see a problem with that
  22. Good to see the Green Party doing well.... 1,500 new members in a single day! They now have more members than UKIP and are very close to overtaking the Lib-Dems.
  23. No worries - just need to keep it really simple and build from there. Start with promoting the most basic elements you can offer.... even if it's just with hand tools to start with. eg, you could do a huge amount of work just using a Silky Saw and a pair of Fiskars loppers.... and you could cycle to jobs within a reasonable distance. That would give you a good opportunity to take some excellent photos for the website. Build from there..... Silky saw link: Natanoko 60 Fiskars loppers: Fiskars loppers for tree pruning
