  1. Reminds me of Crocodile Dundee. "Call that sharp? Now this is sharp!" (Says he pulling out a Fiskars X27 or a MS660 with the engine revving, purely of course for the reason of showing why it's dangerous to cross the barrier).
  2. There are many different lawful excuses for restraining or assaulting someone. But an individual (as opposed to a constable) doesn't have the power to arrest someone unless it's an indictable offence - section 24A(1) Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. It's not an indictable offence to ignore your barriers. An indictable offence is an offence that may be tried at the Crown Court, as opposed to a summary offence which is Magistrates court only. If you start arresting somebody then you're leaving yourself wide open for a claim of wrongful arrest and payment of compensation. Saving "life or limb" would almost certainly be a lawful excuse for restraining somebody. However, it's not a lawful reason to arrest somebody.
  3. Thanks for the replies. Yes, I'll fit it how the manual says.
  4. I've bought a new Windsor rim sprocket for my Stihl MS390 to replace the worn spur sprocket. The Stihl manual says: "Fit rim sprocket with the cavities facing outwards". All the photos of rim-sprockets, including Stihl's own website, appear to show the solid edge outwards: STIHL chain sprockets | STIHL | Stihl, Viking, chain saws, brushcutters, hedge trimmers, clearing saws, high-pressure cleaners, lawn mowers, trimmers Does it matter which way?
  5. The wood is owned by the Forestry Commissioners - section 3(1)(b) Forestry Act 1967. Forestry Act 1967

    ms 290?s

I've got an MS390, which is very similar to the MS290. Similar, but more cc's. I use it to cut the larger logs. I've also got a Stihl 018 which is a bit under-powered. For the smaller stuff I prefer using an electric chainsaw if I can. According to the Owners manual for the MS290 it will take up to a 20" bar. I find a shorter bar is best. I understand that the model has a clam-shell design for the engine and can therefore be a pig to work on. I'm happy with my MS390 but I'm an amateur. I only use it occasionally so it doesn't bother me that it's a heavy saw. If I get tired, I pack up for the day.
  7. Thanks for all the replies. That's really helpful. The old plug was dark grey/ nearly black but not oily. The saw hadn't been used for at least 3 years. I'll start looking at the fuel system and carburettor once my service manual arrives.
  8. I've just bought a Stihl 045AV Electronic, sold as "spares or repair". The spark-plug boot and on-off switch were both missing. To my surprise I got it working this morning with a new plug and boot. I'd pretty much expected beforehand that it would have ignition coil problems. It starts and runs but has a habit of cutting out. That saves worrying about the stop switch . My initial thought is that it's probably not the coil or ignition because it needs the choke to get it started again. That's even when it's really hot. My thinking is that it's the carburettor, but I'm really not familiar with carbs or ignition systems. I've ordered a service manual. Any ideas? Also, are the parts for an 045AV pretty much the same as for an 045?
  9. Nice firm handshake as well. Nothing worse than a limp-wristed handshake.
  10. What about: Fuel Hose for Stihl 048, 042AV - 1117 358 7700 | Other Stihl Spares
  11. I have MS Word versions of both this judgment and that of Michael John Rockall v Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. These are the full judgments. I see that the job's been postponed but f you're still interested then PM me an email address and I'll gladly email them to you.
  12. As others have said, this is an informal partnership without a written partnership agreement. It's probably best not to confuse the issue by referring to it as a "company", because quite clearly it isn't one. The provisions of the Partnership Act 1890 apply. The partnership was dissolved on the death of your brother - section 33. Unless you agree otherwise with your sister-in-law the dissolution provisions in the 1890 Act apply.
  13. Thanks guys. I'll let you know how I get on.
  14. I'd be really grateful for some advice on splitting a fallen ash tree at my parents' place for burning in their woodburners. I've used a Stihl MS390 to cut the trunk into discs. The biggest are about 3' in diameter and 6" deep. They have a 10t hydraulic log splitter - the type that looks like a large hydraulic jack laid on its side. They also have some steel wedges about 8" long, as well as a large axe and sledge-hammer. Any ideas on the easiest way for me to split it using the above tools?
