  1. Unfortunately, that is such a rare quality - esp hereabouts. Not many that can see the latent value of doing someone a favour (FOC.) Too often they can't see past the immediate benefit of cashing-in small scale when the opportunity arises rather than recognise the potential (whether it materialises or not) of the longer term personal relationship benefits in the future.
  2. Far be it from me to say "...I told you so..." to Cornwall council.... But, I did, and since the list of accredited agents has just jumped off a cliff (57 down to to 18 over night - looks like only 1 arb) with the introduction of this f*cking brain child, I hope somebody gets their ass in a sling. No, hold on, public sector, there is no accountability for slamming your balls in the shed door...
  3. Experts - What do the boffins know anyway.... ?
  4. Wife was just telling me about this.... She reckons the dog was stolen some 7-8 years ago - data tag still with the dog. Imagine how good it would be if it could be reunited with original owners
  5. It's been a 'thinking' day Gary.... Best done with a fry up and a lie down ?
  6. Managed a pair of hours this morning looking at a development site - then went for a fry up with the architect. Back on the sofa by midday and waiting for the thunder & lightening to pass before going out to see a customer with an invoice & agree next stage of the job. Raining til Thursday cop so staying indoors til Friday. Struggling to get back into the swing of things....
  7. That just about summarises many of the issues that have been raised AND it serves as ‘home grown’ contradiction to the current line of thought. Doubtless the (seemingly well informed) work to produce that piece has been ‘lost in the files’ and hasn’t been considered by the bright spark promoting the current thinking. Appears like contradictory information from HSE and an absence of the necessary will to oppose from AA. That’s just the way it looks to me....
  8. And the answer to that will PROVE beyond any doubt that Arbtalk IS CPD ?
  9. Buy a new laptop and claim 100% deduction as IT equipment.... Of course you only use it for business purposes.... ? (Arbtalk is CPD ?)
  10. Maybe a broader question Gary.... Why don’t TOs ‘grow up’ to become POs and beyond? If we recognise that the role is generally that of a junior civil servant with limited authority and influence but that it exists in a fairly rare hierarchical system where career progression is actively promoted and available, why are TOs not embracing career progression within LAs? Id wager it’s more common for TOs to exploit opportunities for CPD whilst in the role as preparation for moving into the private sector than it is for them to progress within local government.
  11. I’d go a step further than that even... For a simple business model, the concept of tax investigation insurance is little more than up selling based upon scaremongering. It should be banned as a ‘sharp’ financial practice peddled (most often) by the very people that are drawing professional fees for the proper and accurate production and submission of due returns. You keep a record of receipt & expenditure, you total them up and what’s left, less legitimate deductions, is what you pay tax on. HMRC may try to play big boys but the rules is the rules. If they try and take the piss you take them in front of a tribunal judge and, if yome kosher, they get their pants pulled down! No need for insurance for that....
  12. How can it be? If you only submit expense records for that which you genuinely believe to be legitimate and you pay professional fees to an accountant to prepare and submit that which you have presented, why would you then need to insure against an 'investigation?' If HMRC want to 'investigate' something they will ask for records to be provided in support of tax returns. You should be keeping them for 5 years anyway. What other profession that provides services to you do you insure for?
  13. You seem to have looked at many of the ‘expense’ side of things but don’t forget that legitimate business acquisitions are deductible for tax. Plant and machinery and IT being 100% deductible as Annual Investment Allowance. Don’t get too bogged down in the perceived liabilities of self employment - there are many tax advantages to combining PAYE & SE status.... Go for it!!
  14. Give us the planning application number and name of the council and then we can see the source documentation. Is the ‘report’ you have seen posted online or is it something you have acquired through other sources? You never know, the appropriate TO may even see the thread here and be so distraught at having their laundry aired in public that they chivvy things along....
  15. London's New Year's Eve firework display obscured by smoke | Daily Mail Online WWW.DAILYMAIL.CO.UK Social media users criticised the display, which featured more than 12,000 fireworks, with some saying it was a... Dhooooh.....!
  16. Had he fallen asleep at the wheel and drifted off the road?
  17. I've saved but not read yet Jules... From your observation of the content of the document we can perhaps extrapolate the cost of "doing it" but is there any mention of the potential for year-on-year time/ effort / finance / admin efficiencies that might be realised from having an up-to-date system? - What would be the offset saving of NOT having to deal with the administration of out of date, inaccurate, inappropriate TPOs? - Would a streamlined system represent an enduring efficiency in comparison to maintaining the status quo? I'll read full doc later and see if there are answers already there....
  18. Hope there are some tree left to work on after all this Alex. Keep safe mate.
  19. This a fair point K, but & but.... but (1) 50k is a bit light at purchase cost but (2) if they had any sense they’d say “50k divided by life cycle divided by 365 over life cycle is what’s actually sitting on my drive” Thank goodness good sense is in such short supply... ?
  20. What do you mean? Phone line clearance??
  21. Nothing to disagree with there! Making a 'system' ridiculously complex (and therefore expensive) is about the only thing that CAN be guaranteed when government / local government is concerned. It's a giant Ponzi scheme.
  22. I didn’t get that far down the commercial route. So far as I understood it had to 2 or more domestic properties or 1 domestic / 1 business. Didn’t realise the business had to be equal or greater than 50% of the domestic. Don’t matter anymore, ‘‘tis in the past. Interesting to hear you qualified but declined - now that’s an illustration of just how unnecessarily complex and counter productive these so-called ‘incentives’ can be....
  23. The fall back plan if domestic RHI was delayed any further 'was' to lay pipe to an outbuilding where the dogs are kennelled, they are Schutzhund GSDs and wholly tax deductible (vet, food, training aids etc) as a part of the business. As such, I could have registered the kennels as a separate business and then claimed small premises business rate rebate whilst still being able to provide a business and a residential address for Commercial RHI purposes. It was just too much of a faff laying pipe and heat metering etc to go commercial rather than domestic. In hindsight, on the figures alone, I probably should have done it but time & effort got in the way.
  24. Interesting point, hadn't thought about that, but it is some years off for me yet.... Maybe, at some point, maybe Tesla, will make a compatible system where all components are in sync.
