After doing the above to my Navara I think I get less black smoke as no exhaust gases are fed back into the combustion chamber .

Yea and if sufficient fuel get in the oil and the level rises enough for the mixture to get back into the cylinders the engine then starts to run on this and revs uncontrollably and blows up ...

Diesel fuel gets into the oil thinning it as the thing " over fuels " itself during the regeneration cycle . This extra fuel is not all burnt off and some gets down past the rings thinning the oil and visibly raising the level on the dip stick . Some engines have blown up . Some other manufactures have another injector in or in front of the DPF to squirt fuel into it on the regeneration cycle which seems a better idea .

This DPF " Regeneration " cycle is responsible for the engine oil contamination in some of the early Izuzu D max trucks and their subsequent engine failure .

I was Following a car along the M27 and it belched out a cloud of smoke every 30 yards or so . Went along like that for miles . Seemed like a build up was let go every 15 seconds or so .

I have a pair of Bausch & Lomb 8-24 x 50 which are very good .

Its an 05 model so maybe it was a CAT . It was a matrix afair .

I have found , as you say Steve that performance gains are small . Engine spins up quicker if you tread on the loud pedal but mpg improves slightly if you drive it carefully . The main thing is the inlet manifold stays cleaner and so does the oil . Have you seen those cars/trucks with a sticking EGR valve . Clouds of smoke at random times .

DPF I think . Nissan Navara . The 2.5 133hp engine . Turbo diesel but not common rail .
