  1. I'm baffled by the dimensions....? Surely a cog will have a diameter & thickness....? I cut some windblown the other day, probably have enough but it's not seasoned & no idea how they'd get it there.....
  2. It sounds like I think big guy did wrong, scrote was hard done by! Really, that's not the case. I do have a hint of doubt that there is NO truth in the kid's story, he may well have bought a ticket. However, he'd lost it / got the wrong one, so on his head be it. What he SHOULD have done was been polite and asked for help and maybe someone would have pitched in and life would have gone on. As it was, he was a gobsh*te [i think this has come from his upbringing listening to his old chap on the radio - although it could just have been his accent, I can never tell ], no one else would help to resolve it until it had got to the point where, typically, it fell to the biggest bloke there to sort it out, and he's the one now potentially going to get in trouble for it, and that's not right. If indeed this kid is a consistent fare dodger then he definitely got what he deserved. But either way, the big guy is probably going to get something he doesn't deserve, and if the kid, in his own repugnant way, was telling the truth, then whatever punishment the big guy gets will be even more ridiculous...
  3. There is always the chance that he was telling the truth and actually had bought a ticket? I can't say either way, but there's a chance that the kid could have been telling the truth, just in a particularly objectionable manner... Not that I really give a toss either way, as has been well documented, the kid was a vile little scrote with a massive lack of respect, he probably learned this from his father listening to him on the radio 'those guards, they can be' this and that, what a pillock. I don't use trains, mostly for the others that use them, and I have every sympathy for the bloke who threw this kid off, he's probably going to be the one to have the book thrown at him for trying to sort things out quickly and efficiently. I still maintain that everyone involved could have been right and everyone could also have been wrong. I wasn't there and there's limited information in the video, but what I do know is that this has been turned into a 'big thing' when it really shouldn't. That kid should just learn not to get on without a ticket and that should be the end of it, but it won't be, because of how this country operates now.
  4. I heard this on the radio today. The lad's dad came on and ranted [perhaps justificably] about what a good lad he was, but ended up sounding like a rough sort himself. My opinion of it [if anyone cares!] is thus. The lad may or may not have bought a ticket, got the wrong ticket, whatever. If he had half a brain, some manners, a bit of respect he would have said 'look, I'm sorry, I bought a ticket but I've been given the wrong one, I'm really sorry, I don't have enough for another ticket, could anyone help me out please?' And then taken their address and sent them the money later. All would have been well. But he didn't, he argued an impossible case, and was rude with it. The guard seemed to be a fairly obstinate old git. He could have said 'OK, I believe you but in the interests of being fair to everyone I need a ticket for you to be paid for, if anyone here will be kind enough to help you out we can all get moving'. But he didn't, he picked an outcome and didn't seem to offer any alternative solutions. The big bloke should have offered the fare first rather than jump in and do something which if everyone had the time to calm down and think it through properly, they would have seen to be perhaps a slightly over the top reaction. Everyone else sat there and no one chipped in with a useful solution. I'm not a big bloke, I don't get inolved with violence because 99 times out of a 100 I'd come off worse, but I'd always try to resolve something like this with smiles, it can be done and it's much quicker. It seems to me that everyone involved handled the situation wrong, but now as a result of it rather than move on, the media and blame culture in this country are making this a whole big deal when really and truly, it should just be forgotten about. All feels like a bit of a non story to me..... mistakes were made, learn from it, move on. Will that happen...? 'Course not....
  5. Aaah, so it's purpose is to share the load on a conventional friction hitch so that you don't need to use an expensive mechanical ascender.... All becomes clear now! Thanks!
  6. Sorry guys, I'm diving into the middle of a discussion I don't follow with a stupid question, but can someone just give a outline of what the RW actually does and why? I've watched all the videos I can find and it still isn't really clear... I'm highly unlikely to venture into SRT, I'm quite happy on Ddrt [the remote swapping TIP reason mainly] and the cost to swap to SRT is quite prohibitive for me, but I am fascinated by it. But try as I might I just cannot get my head round the RW. Apologies if it's blindingly obvious and I'm just being thick as 2 short ones but I just can't see how it works or it's purpose! TIA!
  7. http://www.nptc.org.uk/download.asp?file=cs41_underake_sectional_felling__assessment_schedules_june_2010_v2.pdf I think the jist is he would have failed his CS41 assessment in so many ways....
  8. On the basis that not even Google knows, could it be a typo....?
  9. Danish oil is quite good, I slap that on everything, indoors and out, mix it with a bit of Rustins wood dye if I want to change the colour. You'll need to let the wood dry out before you seal and or try to sand it...
  10. Ha! I might try that one!
  11. True, forgot about that.... I use a couple of Ultra-O's in my set up already, nice and spacious!
  12. Who did he buy them from? Was it the guy in Leominster? If so I believe he is a tree surgeon himself so it's surprising that he's selling tat....
  13. Not good. I'll have a look at them next time I get them out....
  14. Presumably it was round one of the holes for adjusting the height? The build quality is VERY questionable I must admit. I'll keep a close eye on them until I can afford some nice ones...
  15. The Ultra-O's are symetrical so you get a nice straight pull through them. I wouldn't have thought it would be much different with offset crabs mirroring each other so the rope lines down through the spines.
  16. I have those monkey metal spurs. I would question how the hell they would get broken.... ! At the time though they were all I could afford and I have to say, seem to do the job. Like I say, not pretty though....! Unless I hear any horror stories it will be the Harkie ali spikes when I can scrape together some cash.
  17. I have Stihl & Oregon leather chainsaw gloves which I wear on the ground [and in the garden, great for dragging brambles!] and I wear ordinary Youngstown work gloves when I'm climbing, they're quite snug fitting with like a faux alcantara palm, I only forget to put them on once when I'm chucking a throw line up! I can even tie & untie knots in them.... Youngstown Gloves – Official Site for Youngstown Performance Work Gloves. Plus Gloves are designed for fit, durability and value. They don't last long mind you....
  18. I know Paul at Specialist Arb, he's done some fabrication for me before, nice guy, lots of holidays! Is the Duncans chipper PTO or donkey engine? And who is JW in Three Cocks? Not come across them...bit of a jaunt for me from the other side of Tenbury though...
  19. If you already have the gear to ascend on a prusik, just changing to a more responsive friction hitch on a split tail [with a prusik, micropulley & crab to self tend] will speed things up no end. I was using a prusik foot loop as well but have added a croll onto that so I can move it up without the struggling that comes from a prusik. I can actually motor up the trees now by my standards! However, as I've found, it won't be long before you're wanting to try a hitch climber, so just as well spend the 70 quid now and be done with it.... that's my next purchase! You should just about be able to see a blakes hitch on the split tail, the pulley under it is clipped to a prusik on the standing line, the croll is in my hand being clipped on with the loop hanging down. This could only be easier if I hung another foot loop and used both feet, it's just stand up, sit down, lift the croll, stand up, sit down. Piece of cake!
  20. Do Arrow run road tow chippers then? I didn't know that, have used Arrow for years but for construction hire. Thanks!
  21. Great, I'll bear that in mind, thanks!
  22. It is a myth that the 'banking sector' costs the country a fortune, we are confusing high street banks [a retail business just like a shop] with commercial banks [the 'city']. High street banks: Bailed out by the government Lent money they didn't have to people who couldn't afford to pay it back Borrowed money they couldn't afford to pay back Invested very poorly and lost a lot of money Didn't keep a sufficient pile of 'real cash' Placed all responsibility for checking credit worthiness in machines rather than intelligent people. Commercial banks: Are allowed to fail [Like Barings] Not bailed out by the tax payer Do not provide private banking Manage investments of large organisations Are actually fairly stable Generate HUGE revenue for the UK The commercial banking sector is in a bit of a pickle because it's trying to generate money to support the high street banks to whom they lend, who need to lend the money to us to buy over priced houses, cars and electrical goods. The 'banking sector proper' does still generate cash for the UK and is NOT a massive drain on our economy. So when people refer to 'fat cat bankers', they're thinking about the wrong people. The mythical enemy in the 'banking sector' is actually the guys writing the software which all our financial lives depend on - 'computer says no' - and the very poor HR management of high street banks who have done away with proper bank managers and farmed it all out to cheap call centres in the quest for higher returns for YOU AND I - the shareholders! [i'm not one but we all could be if we wanted] The 'crisis' in the banking sector is NOT down to 'the city' or 'fat cat bankers'... it's down to some very poor decisions regarding the structuring of high street banks staff, the previous 'prudent' chancellor and his suppression of the base rate, and our insatiable appetite for MORE STUFF.... The city actually has very little to do with the current situation and needs to be protected, it is the one thing which allows us to maintain our position of importance in the world and if we lose it, what else do we have?
  23. Oh...but don't panic....! You will sort it, just probably not with Moorcroft....
  24. I think Moorcroft are indeed a legit debt recovery agency who do work on behalf of Lloyds, I think it was them who I ran up against over a parking ticket from Herefordshire Council as well. However, that doesn't mean it's correct. What they definitely are though is nasty bast&rds... They initially handle it in the office, then hand it over to their bailiffs who are basically thugs and have NO REGARD for the law, so try to nip it in the bud before it gets that far. Write to them and send it recorded delivery, requesting copies of all information they hold relating to this debt and ask for them to confirm who retained their services. If it says Lloyds on the letter, then phone LLoyds NOW on 0845 3 000 000 [keep pressing * to bypass the options] and then give them all the information you have and ask them if it's correct and if not, can they put you through to the department which deals with arrears & debt. It may have been from the court, although I don't think they're actually court bailiffs so despite what they WILL tell you they CANNOT legally enter your property. If they do indeed have a court order to recover the debt you need to find out which court issued it and request a form which needs completing and returning which will freeze the order. Whether it's correct or not, I hate to tell you this but this could become a real pain in the arse and you need to take it seriously and sort it out IMMEDIATELY or they could really spoil Christmas. If the letter is from Moorcroft - Moorcroft Debt Recovery - then PLEASE don't put off doing something about it. I can tell you from experience that it's the most horrid experience I've ever been through, if you have a family you need to stop this before they do set the bailiffs on you because as I say, once it gets to them it's VERY difficult to stop them, they are effectively independent, set their own charges and will only stop when given a very specific command, they don't care if what they're doing is illegal. If they pass it to their bailiffs they will be trying to lift at least twice the claimed debt amount off you... Phone LLoyds NOW!
