  1. On a beech that failed from merrip i seen it seemed the roots deep in the ground that was the point it failed leaving a fair amount of dirt attached to root,if it was k duesta would it more likely to break of near ground level leaving most of the decayed root in the ground just a thourght probly way of:001_smile:

Thats why i said the rootplate is a red herring i think . I cant understand why there was any rootplate at all because there is nothing there , the ground is just so soft being the only reason .

Is there anything i can do to confirm a diagnosis as i will be back there on Monday ? I'm even thinking of bringing in a fung expert .

  2. Where was the first picture taken on the tree?

I would say roughly about 1 meter from the base . Was the only blemish i could see and curiously at one of them white spots . Looked at the merip thread but this tree hasnt tried to lay down what looks like characteristic retrenching roots nor buttressing ?

  3. No snotty black mess or any fruiting bodies at base . Tree was in full leaf but had suffered some crown dieback . Spalting was consistent all the way from top of trunk to bottom and wood was solid . I would have taken the decision to climb which is concerning me . beech6.jpg.8d6e14658fba5c6df8271762e008a732.jpg

  4. That white marking on the trunk is the same as the pics I posted on the fungi thread of a beech with Pleurotus just the other day. I believe the white stuff is caused by an insect.

Looking forward to more informed comments on it.

Thanks Jim thats interesting , will try and follow that up :001_smile:

  5. I would go with merrip for the cause Nice amount of lichens, not sure about the spray mark may be it had been marked up by someone to be felled

Ben , that whats i suggested to the client, ( jokingly ) but it was in a private garden and definitely hadn't been marked up . Couldnt find any fruiting bodies at all . There were porcelain fungi on the upper branches . Thanks for your opinion . :001_smile:

  6. I'll fly the flag for the north east , much much drier than the west for starters !!

Royal deeside is stunning , you have little places like Aboyne then into Ballater then finally Braemar which will you will love . Stunning walks round Loch Muick and the precipitous Lochnagar if your feeling brave !!

If its definitely the west coast how about landing on the beach at Barra in a puddle jumper aircraft ?? Just be ewe and the sheep there

  7. I'm truelly shocked that there are professional arborists out there that cant grasp the difference between a top handle saw and rear handle ?? Couldnt care less how you decide to use a saw but you should at least know the reasons behind each
