  1. Hi, have you looked up solar kilns? saw one recently basically a wooden shed with large sloping south facing window, has some vents, fans and screens to protect timber from direct sun. apparently produces very good results.
  2. interesting to see them in young plantation I imagined them to be associated with old woodland. hmmm I look after a large b/l plantation on poor chalky soil, anyone got a trained pig? this time next year we could be millionaires....
  3. spose it is! wont look quite as majestic for a few years tho.
  4. another woodland based episode on now, some interesting stuff on there, nice to see they're highlighting some of the other tree diseases we faced with. Been meaning to go and see the massive lime stool at westonbirt, guess i'll have to wait for it to grow back now!!
  5. Hi, I've been looking for something similar I found this website based in monmouth might be a bit far for you. Bobcat skidsteer hire
  6. Hi I have a job for a forestry mulcher capable of dealing with trees up 6" diameter at base. eg reverse drive tractor with 3m width mulcher. Anyone have one or recommend any firms in North Wilts area that do?
  7. Its amazing the abuse they'll take, i've also squashed one (or two:blushing:) and got away with bent bars. maybe the best protective measure would be a talking saw that says: er boss maybe you ought to think again before you try that...
  8. he was impressed with its resilience as bits of plastic, av springs and pieces of castings kept popping out of the closing gob! Dont think a roll cage would of helped in this case, i've seen the stump its about 5' diameter. nice idea though maybe you could patent it!?
  9. Indeed, I only wish I'd been there to witness it! It was before i started working with this team, my mate who witnessed it said it was all he could do to stifle his laughter (it was the boss who did it) amidst the torrent of swearing and cursing as the saw met its demise!
  10. Ah not had to do it in a while but have used it a lot felling big h/woods and on larger conifer with small saw. learnt to do it to compensate for short bars but as said above does have other benefits, stopping ripping etc. If you are short on bar I agree its amazing how a tiny strip left in the centre of the tree will hold it up and have you sweating over your felling lever or beating wedges in! I know of someone who bored the hinge on a massive beech, put in the felling cut and wedges, tree wouldn't move, so they stuck the saw back into the bore cut to make sure... tree moved 1/4 of an inch and saw was stuck, the tree then ever so slowly continued its fall! apparently the big old stihl kept ticking over until the very end, but resembled a crushed tin can when they extracted it from the under the butt!
  11. Well woods are in the lime light at the minute arent they? They're in the dean next week, no mention of Chalara yet I was expecting a john craven investigates piece on it.
  12. Yeh it is definitely a compilation of old stuff, and arent those the same pigs/farmer that turned up on the bbc 4 wildwood thing?
  13. tommy, i cant remember the exact amount but I think the invoice was for 3 hours labour, which I thought was a bit much as he was done in less time than it took me to finish my cuppa!
  14. Anyone know of anyone able to carry out LOLER inspections in north wilts? Used a well known ag machinery dealer last year, the bill was eye wateringly large (to inspect a front loader tractor, guy was done in less than 15 mins).
  15. hl95 hedgetrimmer wouldn't run properly pretty much from new, small ms250 saw wont stay in tune, and the b*****d fuel caps drive me to tears!! Huskys have been faultless.
  16. Great thanks for the replies guys. I'll sort out some of the larger straight lengths and see how I get on. I used to work on estate with a sawmill and spent a lot of time milling softwoods and oak for fencing and local building trade. I wish now that I had made better use of my time there and put some stuff away to dry somewhere! On my next visit to see my old mates i'll get some of this cherry planked up and find a corner in the shed. I'll try and get some pics to post, from the tree to milled timber.
  17. Hi I am currently felling some cherry and want to keep some for milling, I know cherry is notorious for splitting, so what is the best process to obtain some decent boards? Do I just seal the ends of the logs, store them and mill in a year or so? Do I mill now and stick and stack boards? Do I mill and find a kiln to dry it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.
  18. stay away from muckboots! They'll be torn to shreds in a week and you'll fall over lots if its wet and muddy! Aigles for me, last pair lasted years of serious abuse.

  20. Hi, I cut a small cherry burr from a tree felled this week, ( I guess about 250mm x 100mm x 50) its lying next to the cord stack in the wood is that too small? There are a couple of big lumpy cherry's marked to come down i'll keep an eye out for any larger burrs if you like?
  21. ha, ha, ha, hammond drives that harvester bout as well as he drives a jet powered car.....
  22. Hi, if you're in the south west the wessex silvicultural group would be worth looking at.
