  1. Apparently there was quite a frenzy in there early on the Saturday. If you can sell it then slicing your logs up does seem to add a serious amount of value. The provenance seems to be really important. People liked the fact that the timber had come straight off the estate.
  2. What kind of forestry are you looking to do? What would be your dream job?
  3. No, Sunday best for public appearances. Got paparazzi'd coming out of the wood turners shed! Great to catch up with the ever resourceful Agg221, also The Essex Log Man and Father Farmer Ben. Not the best of shows, Weird and Wonderful Wood gets my vote. The steam powered sawmill was good though and the timber sale tent has got me thinking for the future.
  4. Excellent! Prepare to talk floor boards:001_smile:
  5. Need some help again folks! We are just starting out on a self build project and I am really keen to use Oak from the wood for certain features in the house. One of these features is flooring. I have Oak trees and I have access to a Woodmizer. Beyond this I am totally clueless and would really appreciate some advice on all aspects of milling, drying, finishing and laying the boards. Has anyone done this sort of thing before? I'm sure there are plenty of do's and do not's Many thanks, TVI.
  6. Didn't realise it was this weekend. Thanks for the heads up! Will head down on Sunday too.
  7. Next time maybe! Certainly wouldn't be adverse to looking as cool as Chad:thumbup1:
  8. It's kept me alive thus far Stubby, although I have been severely beaten up on quite a few occasions.
  9. Yes, I wasn't going to go in to that as it sounds like sour grapes, but from what I could tell the only 'green' things the other businesses had done was take advantage of government incentives which resulted in them receiving lots of money. This is no bad thing, but it would be nice if the businesses who try to tread lightly for it's own sake were rewarded rather than those who will only be environmentally considerate if there is monetary rewards.
  10. End of the first day of negotiations, the interpreter is really earning his money on this one!
  11. Chin up Steve, there's always next time:thumbup:
  12. Quite so Silky. It was really nice to finally meet Felix. His service was excellent, although I'm not sure I got my full quota of milk pudding.
  13. Full PPE is a must I reckon. Chainsaws can do funny things sometimes, as can trees both standing and fallen. Even the most experienced cutters get a surprise from time to time. As already mentioned chainsaw trousers/chaps and a helmet with visor are essential. I never use a saw without my chainsaw boots on either. Chainsaw gloves are probably a good idea too while you gain more experience. It's all a bit boring talking PPE but, as you can probably tell, I have taken some robust knocks to the noggin in the woods over the years and have given thanks every time to the Dark Lord that I had my lid on.
  14. I find the whole stocks and shares thing a bit depressing. Making money by just moving money around, sometimes with no care of who one is investing in seems fairly soulless. The average amount of time that stock is held by any one person on the markets is 22 seconds! I appreciate that most of you will be investing using methods that would bring this average up but it still seems unreal. It would be interesting if traders on the stock market were obliged to actually take delivery of whatever 'stock' they buy. 20,000 tons of iron ore turning up on your doorstep would certainly be a bit of a reality check!
  15. Thanks Ste, Odd that Spectrum were so complimentary, all I did was buy a sawbench from them! Did you get yours in the end?
  16. Mrs Idiot didn't win I'm afraid, she lost out to some marketing company:thumbdown: On the plus side, my mongolian chieftain's black ceremonial battle uniform with thigh boots, Yak horned helmet and polished chrome codpiece still fits a treat, and I ended up having the whole table to myself. Thanks for all the advice but I think I would have felt a little self conscious in a black suit and tie.
  17. After some advice. I have to attend a business awards dinner this evening. Mrs Idiot is up for Best Environmentally Minded Business. My issue is that the invite states 'Black Tie' dress code. I am unsure how to interpret this. I can certainly do the black but I don't have a tie. Thinking of taking the ceremonial broad sword to demonstrate that I mean business. Do you think this will suffice? Many thanks TVI.
  18. They might all want to see it, but they'll be damned if they have to give up a little of their own luxury to achieve it.
  19. Coppicing and re-establishing rides in neglected woodland for me. It's really satisfying to look back after a hard days toil to see the vista completely changed, with light flooding in and piles of logs for milling, firewood and charcoal neatly stacked for extraction, and knowing that your efforts are going to give a massive boost to the wildlife. Almost topped by walking through the same area the following summer and being surrounded by bees, butterflies and plants you've never seen before. It's magical! But not in a wizardly way you understand.
  20. I don't know is the honest answer, although I'd be very surprised if you did.
  21. Dear Chipper owners, Mrs Idiot and I are looking to hire a chipper (with or without owner) for a day to chip up the tops from a load of cricket bat willows. All material is below 4". Does anyone in or around Suffolk have a suitable machine, and would they be willing to relinquish it for a day sometime in the next couple of weeks? Also, what would you need to charge? Many thanks TVI
