  1. Funnily enough about a year ago an Irishman called at our door saying he was on the way home from a trade show and offered us a top quality Stihl chainsaw for £100. Reported incident to police who checked it out and found him to be legit! Had correct paperwork and all. Should have taken a punt but why was he selling ridiculously cheap and making it look like stolen goods. Very strange
  2. Amazed at the cost of a chainsaw (£60-80!) . Worth buying one to do just one job. Whats the catch? Have they got innards?
  3. Re; Self employment I believe the Inland Revenue will give you a binding definition of whether what you propose is legal (as regards tax). Having worked on what in hindsite (you are employed on a self employed basis!) were illegal contracts you as employer must question your own motives for keeping someone off the books. If it is to cut costs BE VERY CAREFUL. Insurers won't like it and just because an "employee" has agreed to it means nothing when the excrement starts flying.......... By the way my experience was in farming
  4. What practical difference, if any, is there in fitting non original pistons and cylinders when rebuilding an engine. Is it a case of you get what you pay for or are the original parts just too expensive for what they are? Many thanks
  5. I take it that your wife is out for the evening
  6. Thought the rule was not to use old engine oil as it contains nastys
  7. They were East German and 2-stroke. Friends father had one. Sounded good and smoked.
  8. I wonder if anyone can give a definitive answer on this. Common sense would suggest that 25;1 fuel/oil mix would give greater lubrication than 50;1. But I seem to remember from my biking days the manual saying "adding a bit for luck" would make the engine run lean and overheat. Not so common sense after all perhaps:confused1:. Any thoughts ?
  9. 5 gallons. What you doing with that much? Handy for dissolving corpses I guess
  10. 2 stroke is up there with the dark arts........
  11. I believe Spirit of Salts (used for cleaning limescale in toilets) is 32% Hydrochloric Acid. Sold in hardware shops
  12. Really enjoying reading your thread. Always been afraid of doing more than basic servicing but this is making how a chainsaw works clearer. Need to get hold of a scrap saw to have a play:thumbup1:
  13. Many thanks for all your input. Don't work in this business but fascinated by what you do. If I was 30 years youger......
  14. I'll look out for a scrap saw and have a play. I notice from reading "Whats on my bench" that lean sieze ups are a common problem. Would an operator get prior warning e.g change in engine note and save himself a disaster? Could a user know when the crankcase seals are leaking? Many thanks
