We're looking for a Climber and Groundsman to fill permanent vacancies. We have a good variety of commercial work on long term contracts. Ideally the Groundsman should hold a pre 97 driving licence. A contractor I know was doing a bit of felling a couple of years ago and as the tree came over it pulled a branch out of an adjacent tree which came down and struck the one of the guys killing him outright. Don't underestimate how dangerous this job can be.

BS3998:2010 is the British Standard for tree work, wherever possible this should be the minimum standard for tree work. Also try the Arb Association website, there's some useful publications on there.

I know "Amey" in Birmingham are looking for guys. They have a 25 year contract with the Council for the street trees.

The great pity in this is that honest, hard-working people will lose their jobs. The blame lies with the top-brass that either under-price work or can't run a contract. I've met a number of Fountains Managers along the way and they've ranged from downright crooks to incompetent buffoons and everything in-between. Personally i'm glad they've gone and hopefully the incompetent ones will do us all a favour and change career. I couldn't give a monkeys about slander etc etc, yes I'm one of the many that has been "tucked-up" in the past so I'm entitled to my opinion.

As an Arboricultural Association Approved Contractor I aim to only employ guys that have had formal arb training AND have the certificate or diploma to prove it. The certificate is no guarantee of a guy being any good of course but it's an indicator. Likewise, there are many brilliant guys out there that don't have formal college certification. On balance though, I'd expect the college guys to have the edge.

We have half a dozen mature Oak & Ash ringed-up on a site in Long Crendon, free to whoever wants to collect them. Client requested that timber was cut-up for his own use then changed his mind........Grrrr! Easy roadside access, probably about 8 tons. Email me for site details [email protected]

Hi, try making contact with one of the big plc companies. These firms usually hold OHSAS 18001 & will normally have a SHE Manager that maintains the "system". Firms you could try are: UPM Tilhill & Fountains. West Coast Energy also have a SHE Manager & they regularly amend working practices as a result of a Near Miss or accident. The "systems" approach is what Quality, Environmental & Safety Management systems are all about: implement - monitor - review - change - monitor - review etc etc. Hope this helps.
