tbh i wuold do it, there are plenty of people with no work on atm who would be glad of any work, whilst i appreciate what ur saying and the fact that its near your house ect. But this realy is standard work for any tree surgery firm,the hedge has been alowed to grow over the path, the client should of kept it in check. There is no point being involved in this industry, as a contractor unless we are willing to do things that arnt realy ethical for the trees (within reason).

got a good chunk of the root ball, had to lose quite a few of the longer surface roots thou, what compost would you recomend?

Dug out a silver birch tree (with landrover) 7ish meters, got it back to the yard and planted it in a large bulk bag...(slightly bigger than a one tonne bag) rachet straps and four stakes to secure it. I also ground up several mycorspykes mixed tham with water and threw all over the roots b 4 i planted it. Have i done the right thing...any more advice on keeping this thing alive, and any veiw on how much its worth? Thanks

Just a follow on question, not having a dig but out of intrest, could you have knocked it out in bigger bits and avoided any lowering?
