  1. Im with you on that Ed. Right use for the right timber. I still say carve dead. (im not a carver) And just because I say have a responsible attitude to things - as everything we do has a knock on effect - doesn't mean I'm a hypocrite, so while you're busy grinding that axe somewhere else, mr.skyhuck, im off to build a jackdaw house ;-)
  2. which you havent yet... as opposed to the one in yours.. it's you tree carving hippies that are the yogurt weaving vegetarians ;-)
  3. Oh no, im starting to see a hole in my argument I remember when I was 16, totally murdering an oak carving into it while off my face with my mates.. I still look back in horror and think what a dick. My point, again, in all of this, is about bucking a trend in the general psyche, not to carve into trees. I see so many with nasty abuse. Who's to say if eddies' creation would stop and make people think to be more respectful of where they are, or carve their own - and the problems for the tree that will likely bring.
  4. skyhuck, I just dont see the difference. a tree is a tree, sherman or a local beech. carve dead. My whole point is, cant we just leave some things alone?
  5. kill my own ;-) aint that the problem with stereotypes
  6. rob, what im trying to do here is buck a general trend. lets put a spin on it.... you go all the way to CA, to view the majesty of General Sherman. You get there and someone has carve a pretty little face into it. what would you really feel about it?
  7. dont be a projectionist mate just to win kudos. you assume that because I have a solid view on the matter, that I am "upset" you dont OWN that tree any more than you own that little girl in the pic, they both exist independent of you, whether you are here or not.
  8. shall I spell it out? most times (at least in my work) the tree had to come down, disease or whatever. So, like anything, it is a resource we use. So thats a crap argument mr, and you know it. Live carving just sets a trend. Take grafitti, some clever guys make a great work of art, and then every little brat grabs a spray can and makes the entire place look like crap with his squiggles. Look, I walk thru "the beeches" at my house, every one of them is butchered. So annoying to see. Anyway, carve, leave your mark, Ive said my piece. Why not a great big picture of yourself that we can all marvel at how great you are, like that monstrosity caved into a mountain of the 4 pious presidents.
  9. put up a sign ! go ahead, carve live,,, sooner or later,(likely, probably later) our species will realise we don't have to leave our mark on everything we touch. Personally, I go to the woods, to ESCAPE YOU ! I dont want a reminder OF you!
  10. looks cool, trouble is, some little spaz will come along and go "er, i can do that, what shall i do, err, liverpool FC". just dont encourage live carving
  11. here is a lovely carving on a live beech by my house. A love heart. so much love it damaged the tree! If you cant see that the tree itself IS the art, you deserve to work in an office with 4 grey walls.
  12. I have been known to be quite vociferous, and im about to be again... carving living trees, to me, is like "territorial p***ing". Walking thru the woods and seeing some sap having carved his name in a tree. Like anyone cares. it is no different if it is "artful". Let the tree be the tree. Carve dead wood.
  13. i guess, 1 day cutting to size, and shaping (top edge is not waney but hand cut - wanted it looking like stone) 1 day drawing, 1 day carving, 1 day sanding, 1 day on inlays, 1 day in a blonde wig, 1 day spraying.
  14. now build yer, the granberg is the dogs... dont make my mistake of whining about it being a monsta to sharpen, if you haven't already got one, I think you're going to need one of those oregon 12v sharpeners.
  15. i would say Si, including my mincing about, 48hrs over 2 months.. spray tent was an argos bargain at 29.99! 3mx3m inc sides. both parts half price, get one of them free if you buy both from the same store.. odd deal, think it is still on..
  16. Brian, Paul, Arbmark, thanks for the comments fellas ;-)
  17. i couldn't make 6-8 chairs, i'd be so bored by the end of it, unless they were really simple. and there's nuthin wrong with ikea, i have some of it in my house. spoons
  18. i have a very particular way of looking at things.. I blame the LSD from yonder years
  19. sometimes, I think forums etc can be a bit 'mutual appreciation society'... but i'm not going to blow smoke up your ass for the sake of you commenting on my work... I honestly like it. Despite its lack of symmetry, it lacks none! in some ways it is more balanced for its design. Even the vine twist marks give it more life. And it is work from a mans heart and mind, not just some old toot bashed together. I'd buy it.
  20. Do so, Album is called 'bareback', which is also song on the album about her angelically singing about getting a good seeing to whilst riding a horse.. Wifes' gotta love that
  21. If you were a girl, I'd marry you for that comment - thanks Mike And thanks to anyone who has commented on this work. Your sentiments are respected and your honest generosity is heartily valued. And those who didn't like it, well, there's always Ikea
  22. Thanx for the hearty comments bud ;-) if interested, the folk is "18 dogs" by hank dogs, a tale of a girl with an M16 rifle and a pack of dogs slaughtering a bunch of cowboys that came to take advantage.. quality stuff.
  23. and its for sale if anyone wants to make me an offer - I want to buy a new paraglider
  24. Thank you sir! I dont know about lowly chainsaw carver! after 30 years of using them, I still cant cut a str8 ring with a 48" bar - and there's some on here that could have carved my table out of a block (he who did that elven/fantasy chair for starters). Dowel? Not sure. One of the earth gnomes did tell me once, but I had my pants down at the time and was busy. Heart of newt, ear of bat, innit? ;-)
