  1. Condolences to his family and friends such a tragic accident x
  2. Thanks for the responses i would eventually like to go self employed but have a lot to learn and stuff so a bit of a way off i guess but very interesting to hear how everyone seems to be from light till dark makes sense i guess im just trying to get an estimate on what sort of hours i will be looking at certainly answered my question
  3. Im looking at doing cs30,31 then finding some employment but just wondered how many hours do you guys generally work and do you get much weekend work? i have the issue of childcare etc when i start up so im trying to get a rough guide of where i will be with it all thanks all
  4. Hanna how do i join the ladies group? not sure if i clicked on the correct link as it didnt seem to do anything thanks

  5. Hi ruth im looking at starting out once get my cs30 &31 and find a suitable placement just wondered how are you getting on did you find out about insurance costs afterwards?as this is somthing that i had on my to do list to find out ,its nice to see im not the only woman who is taking a career change :)hope its going well for you
  6. Thanks martyn the lady i spoke to at lantra mentioned somthing about private trainers and said if i had no luck with anything to get back to them.Yes i think your right its called pencoed i done a pet microchipping course there about 6 years ago so only ever been there once but they are lanbased studies similar to how usk used to be,usk stopped doing most of those type of courses unfortunatly . thanks it would be good to have some help but i have a feeling it may be tough to start but i will get there someway somehow lol
  7. Hi Im just outside newport the grant is not directly linked to the industry it is run by the local am assembley member for newport west and is actually targetting women who want a career change (yes im a woman )i came across an old article in the argus about the grant so looked further into this newport womens forum and it sounds like it may be of some help ,as i mentioned above i spoke to a lady at fff and was told they provide 75% of the funding towards training if you are directly linked to the tree forestery its worth giving them a ring and speaking to them direct but i think i may be able to get some funding for myself if the am scheme is still up and running but i will not know until tomorrow when i ring to find out but worth a try,but if you search enough there must be other grants out there and if i hear of anything else will post it on here to help some of the others out as im discovering you really have to do some ground work to find out where to get what, the closest to me that does a full time course lantra told me was bridgend which is too far for me in my situation as would have to fork out childcare and travel costs when my income is pretty low at the moment would work out cheaper to save and do tickets locally with the week course.anyway hope this helps
  8. If your too young to do the course and want to keep cost down i would google grants for your area and see if anything is available after my post earlier i done a search and its given me another route to go down for funding via a grant for people in this area who want a career change so im on the blower first thing tomorrow lol fingers crossed
  9. Im having simlar issues in sunny south wales contacted lantra which in england they fund to train up women arborist in wales nothing im looking at currentley paying the cost for my cs30/31 and to be honest would lovce to know where i can get funsing from i jhave spoken to several organisations my local collages do not do full time nd or similar only part time forestery nvq i would have to travel miles to get somewhere every day to do a full time course plus i have two little ones so would need childcare wich im not sure i would get if i was not employed i am on income support at the moment and the dole will not pay anything towards me stepping onto the arborist ladder which to be honest sucks i really do want to go into this line of work and so far have found nothing apart from stumbling blocks and cost . i need to find somebody who is willing to employ me but obviously i need my tickets so i can get my insurance etc there is very little info through careers wales as to how i need to start and as somebody genuinly wanting a job and not being a dole bum i would of thought somebody out there would of been willing to help but apparently not. I recommend you try lantra depending on where you are based and there is also places like focus on forestery first which will pay 75% of training costs as long as you have a job that is willing to take you on after you finish the tickets which is one of the ways i think i will have to try and go down to cut costs my situation slightly different from yours as i have two children to work around and have to sort childcare so probabley not as employable as some would like but to be honest i want the experience and to learn as i go along so even if im able to join somebody for a day a week i would be happy .good luck with it anyway
  10. The college near me said the course for cs30 & cs31 would cost £758 but i may be entitled to an ila grant or somthing which would be about £200 towards the cost im going top enquire with the college and find out more though
  11. Sorry to hear of your loss littletree sounds like you were very close i lost my mum at the age of 65 just over a year ago its not easy but as others have said it better to talk about it than bottle it up inside
  12. I am completely inspired to do it especially by little tree its nice to hear from somebody who is actually in that situation ,I guess another question i should ask is what sort of living could i make from doing it would it depend on what contracts and stuff i manage to get ?also how long would it take to do my tickets?and what ones are there somebody i spoke to yesterday mentioned there are different ones like climbing etc but im not sure how correct they are also are there many jobs in this line of work out there?just wondering how i would go about getting employed by somebody i could learn more from and gain more experience .thanks all
  13. Wow thats a really good response i already have two saws small one for small stuff bigger one for larger logs i work with and i have all my kit there is a course advertised at a college local to me Coleg Gwent Online - im not sure if this would be the right course to start on? I actually know an old lecturer who has his own business he used to teach at the college doing the same courses but i have not seen him for a few months to stop and ask and bring up the subject, but after listening to you guys i think i should follow what i feel i would enjoy doing i am physically fit not big though but i have found ways around dealing with the wood i cut that is extra heavy and awkward like you say,one of neighbours remarked as he had a huge oak tree land on the river bank behind his house and his neighbour enquired about it for firewood but he remembered speaking to me before about the wood and knew i was looking out for firewood so gave me a shout and turned the neighbour down and he was suprised when i turned up on his door with my ms391 and my kit prepared to take it away and he was suprised when i did it which to be honest his neighbour would of never managed.I enjoy being outdoors and wildlife and nature and i enjoy doing my firewood i hate being couped up inside and think there is nothing worse than being stuck indoors doing a job ,i have two young sons the youngest will be starting school full time next sept so i am looking really for somthing that i guess i could work on until then and continue with afterwards .i think that college course is only 1 week and one day exam and im not sure what sort of work i would be able to do after that i guess there is a lot of licences etc involved with felling and maintaining trees and i understand most of the whole tpo business etc i would love a job forestery or somthing like that but i think i have a lot to learn first though .Thanks all im glad to know really im not the only woman who has an interest in this stuff most of my mates think im crazy but are all behind me on it and think im more than capable so i guess i should give it a go and see :)i feel all excited at the thought now lol
  14. After watching my husband for years do our firewood I finally decided I was gonna pitch in and do my own bit and quiet recentley was inspired when i went to a local arts festival to find a woman chainsaw sculpter there,I guess in a way i actually do enjoy what i do when i busy doing the wood,im just not sure if i should take things that one step further and get myself educated in tree felling, maintaining etc ,i know a fair bit considering im a woman i just dont know if its worth going into.Just wondered what everyone opinions are on this and do you know of any women who are in this type of work?
  15. Just wondered does anyone know why the forestry comission stopped these?I live near wentwood and i can see when i walk my dogs stacks of logs that could be used for firewood i currently get my logs off the river which can be muddy at times and quickly blunts my chain as a result and am trying to find a better source for wood as i get through quiet a bit in the winter i dont want stuff already logged and split as i can do all that myself i just want lengths e.g like the stuff lying around wentwood ,i understand its good for habitat etc to leave some lying around for eco system benefits and what not but there seems to be loads left i cant understand why they stopped doing the foraging licence?or is there somthing that has replaced this and if so please can you advise me thanks
