  1. I'm so very sorry to read this. My condolences to you & your family .
  2. Rich, out of interest, was retention (reduction and/or rod/hollow rope bracing etc....) considered between the HO and who ever took the job? No worries if it crosses confidentiality .
  3. Nice work Rich Is it a collective experienced gut instinct as to where to place the straps or working to a formula? .
  4. Thanks Fred, glad you found it of some interest. where we are, people do find this type of management an eyesore but there is also a trust that we are managing the site for more than just aesthetics. regards David
  5. In terms of additional exposure? Nothing, as they're facing the prevailing wind and have woodland at their backs. I've just submitted an article to the AA mag that focuses on maintaining Standing Dead Trees. Key to the decision as to how much dead/declining canopy can be left, is going to be target led to a greater extent. Existing habitat can be detached & resurected in to surrounding trees to maintain it as such. Adams idea sounds.........interesting .
  6. ain't that the truth Its shocking how many poor quality trees are still selected for planting out in the urban environment. .
  7. It really doesn't take very long for the cardboard to disintegrate and is a great way to start the process .
  8. thanks chaps, glad you enjoyed it. Always find it fascinating going back and looking at how pruning wounds and fractures etc develop over a period of time. those two are still looking OK, but we continue to keep a close eye on them. if vitality & resource allows, a reduction will ensue at some point over the next 18 months looking forward to seeing some shots of your new patch & tree populations .
  9. a job from a while ago, but I've just put the images together in a vid format so thought I'd share. [ame] [/ame] .
  10. a vid of the dismantle of a road side dead beech from a few years ago & a look at how the monolith is doing..... .
  11. Inosculation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia pretty common in woodland but also to be found along roadsides by trees that are in to 'touching themselves' .
  12. Looks a lot better than it did 2 summers ago. (taken about the same date) Didn't note it at the time, but I'm wondering if it was subject to anthracnose back then and had shed a significant number of leaves due to it. If you get the chance when next walking by, have a look on the ground for any leaves that look wilted and have the central vein shutting down. (Looking at the vitality, I doubt there will be any though) No real overall health significance, just interested Also, with regards the two picnic benches directly underneath the canopy, if any of the dysfunctional branches are removed, a look at a cross sectional disc taken from the base of the branches to look for Massaria symptoms, would also be of interest. .
  13. I'd agree with the comment that moisture level of any dust will be key to how much quantity may be inhaled Here's a (referenced) list of tree species and their known allergy & toxicity qualities Wood Allergies and Toxicity | The Wood Database http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-dust-safety/ .
  14. That's cool Glen .
  15. A drake in a large cavernous des res in north London. Didn't see if the Mrs was at home. .
  16. older & current bracket & wedge showing flesh & pore surface .
  17. a closer look at the decay & the fruit bodies .
  18. a root collar failure associated with white rot decay of Perenniporia fraxinea on ash .
  19. We are looking to potentially commission a flock of carved sheep The setting is a victorian park in north west london which was the home of an agricultural show which was visited by Queen Victoria (this is how the park got its name - Queens Park) This link back to the parks history is the reason behind the commission. If anyone is interested feel free to PM me David .
  20. That's pleasing to hear Look forward to seeing the update .
  21. The Silky Rosegill - Volvariella bombycina here on a still-live, but topped Horse chestnut. .
  22. This one? how's it doing now Alec? Couple of summers ago I thought it was looking a bit sparse in the outer canopy, and retaining a couple of branches that may have been massaria. .
  23. Looks to be leaning away from the building Alec. I'd be inclined to leave it in terms of target management but for its own sake and future stability, it may be worth considering a reduction of the sail and possibly the end weight of the larger heaviest lateral branches depending on assessment. .
