  1. We buy our blades from EPS. The Roma Gold at 55mm wide. These are last year's prices though. We get a small discount if buying more than 10 blades at a time. We had some issues with the welding on one of the batches of blades we bought, but Ross Anderson in Kirkcaldy, sorted out the problem and got the blades replaced with a quick turnaround.
  2. ARV

    Oak slab price

We'd have been about the same price as Topchippyles. But that's just based on the volume of wood. If the board had been planed or a straight edge put on, we charge for the original volume plus a charge for the work.
  3. Big J moved on from milling to forestry. I took on his milling business and we do still use the Kiln he put together. Andrew
  4. I haven't been in touch yet, I was waiting to see if any other companies were suggested. Thank you for asking though. Andrew
  5. I have done. We struggled to get anyone to quote us last year as we are a sawmill with no tree surgery/forestry. I thought I'd ask here in the hope that another Sawmill might answer. I've been given a suggestion to follow up from the insurance forum.
  6. Hi, Can anyone recommend a company/broker to go to for sawmill insurance? Cheers, Andrew
  7. Anyone?
  8. We've just had our renewal quote through. It's up about £400 on last year to around £2600. Just wondering A) is this is roughly in line with other people for the increase as well as the overall amount. And B) who other people use for insurance Regards, Andrew
  9. Had a bit of a sinking feeling when we spotted something shiny in a board.... Then the relief when you find it's just a shotgun pellet
  10. We were back on the Elm today. Some great figure and colours.
  11. So, how much is my very expensive (not) black walnut worth? ?
  12. Thanks guys.
  13. Hi guys, We've kilned some boards from a site clearance for a customer. It was a mix of woods. Amongst the stack were a few boards like this. The bark looks quite smooth, a greyish green colour (though it has been through the kiln) it also looks to have a segmented pith. Could it be Walnut? If not, any other ideas? Cheers, Andrew
  14. A mixed bag of milling for us today. Trying to clear up some odds and sods in the yard. Some Sycamore, Ash and Elm . There was also a small Oak log but I didn't take any photos of that

  16. I had a thought, as I originally said, this wood was from a site clearance. I had a look at the council planning site. There was a tree survey done, according to the tag on one of the stems it is a Sycamore. There were some Norway maple on the survey as well so that may be an option for some of the other stems.
  17. Norway maple is looking like a good shout.
  18. Definitely not elm.
  19. Can anyone help identify these logs. They came from an urban site clearance. We're milling them for a charity. Very pale wood, but with the odd dark heart.

  21. I'll get some pictures of the boards after the weekend. If Big J hadn't sold all his chainsaw milling kit before we took over, then that's what we would have done! If we end up doing more quarter sawing, it may be worth us investing in some kit for dealing with oversized logs.
  22. That one was just under 1m diameter, it took a good few hours to split. It had to be turned to finish the cut. The cuts didn't quite meet up so we ended up using the telehandler forks as wedges and splitting the last bit apart. To Quarter it we put it on the mill, took a couple of inches off the top, then could mill through the middle to get a quarter.
  23. Been quarter sawing some Oak for a customer. Our first attempt at Quarter sawing. Need to work on the chainsaw skills!
  24. Is anymore information on the trees available? Species, Size etc.
  25. What information did logosol supply with the kiln? Do they give specific schedules for different species/thicknesses or is it more of a general guidance.
