  1. Have you tried roughing the blanks then end sealing? I've found that works well too.
  2. The best method I know is quite simple and very effective. Collect the old stubs of candles and chuck them into an old saucepan. melt it slowly over heat and paint the ends of the timber with the wax. It slows down the drying process considerably and prevents most of the cracking you'd expect with plain old air drying.
  3. Strangest thing I was ever given by a customer was a Perspex upper gunner turret from a late 40's British bomber. It made a brilliant cold frame!
  4. Come and see me on the GreenMech stand this Friday or Saturday and I'll do my best to help you out! Julian
  5. A few weeks ago I posted about a break-in in a Gloucestershire tree surgeons yard where a very substantial quantity of Stihl equipment was taken. The thieves returned on Friday night but were spotted by the security guard on the secure site before they reached the premises in question. They turned tail and fled before the guard was able to get the number plate but he did get a good look at the vehicle. Please be on the lookout for a silver Subaru Forester. In this instance it was carrying a gang of four people, when it was seen on the camera last time there was only one person in the car. Keep a close eye for car like this if the people seem to be taking a keen interest in your premises. If you are unlucky enough to see them hanging around your place, please take the registration number if possible and report it to the police immediately as it already associated to the earlier break-in. Many thanks for taking the time to read this, I hope none of you have need for it!

  7. Just had a chat with my brother and he said something rather disturbing. Apparently, he cannot currently replace the missing hedge trimmers as so many have been stolen nationally in the last few weeks that there are none available from Stihl in the UK at the moment. He tried numerous suppliers and they all reported back with the same story. On a more positive note, there is now a 20 stone security man and massive Rottweiler "attack dog" stationed 50 yards away from his unit in plain sight of the compound every single night now! Go on scumbags......I dare you!
  8. Thank you for the kind offer, I believe they have begged, borrowed and been loaned the kit to get them by for now but the offer is appreciated. I'm the regional rep for Greenmech so get around the southern region and hear of cases like this almost on a weekly basis which I find very depressing. I meet an awful lot of you at the trade fairs and know you are a very decent bunch of folk, striving to work to high standards, working long days to earn your living. It's hard enough for you without wondering if your kit will be there when you turn up to work every morning. The only thing we can do is share information when these things happen and hope it turns up somewhere, probably at a car boot sale for a fraction of it's worth. Thanks again for the offer!
  9. Hi Marc, I think it's highly likely it is the same people. There has been a spate of break in's of this nature around this part of the world in the last few weeks. It would appear that they hit an area then move on to the neighbouring counties. Luckily, only Stihl equipment went, not the chippers or trucks. I hope your insurer sorted you out quickly.
  10. No, unfortunately they only had one man on at night and the facility is huge. They didn't enter through the front door either, they left a clear trail of the path they took including a huge hole in the perimeter fence. As for the haul, it's in excess of £18000.
  11. My brothers secure storage site was broken into in Gloucestershire over the weekend. 36 items of Stihl equipment was taken, ranging from climbing saws to hedge trimmers. Every piece of equipment had been etched with the letters "TM" followed by number. Please, if anyone is offered anything with this identifying mark on it could you get in touch? I know it's a long shot but anythings worth a try, right? Luckily, the generosity of a couple of local tree companies has helped see them through yesterday and the replacement kit starts arriving today. Beefed up security is being fitted as I write this, apparently 24 hour manned security wasn't enough! This is the third such theft in this area in the last couple of weeks so please let it be a reminder to us all that unless we go to unusual lengths to protect our property it stands a high chance of becoming someone else's property. Thanks all for taking the time to read this.
  12. It was on display James, all polished up waiting for visit. Pity you went to the wrong depot! After the success of the open day Godfreys are planning to do the same again at the same time next year, but at the Sevenoaks branch. I will be supporting this event again with another rook of GreenMech demonstrators. I'm sure you're going to have many a happy hour chipping up with your new chipper James, thank you for your custom!
  13. I'll be there for the duration. I have our new GreenMech Arborist chippers on the Godfreys stand. Anyone staying at The Forge in Halland by any chance?

  15. Try giving Graham at TH White (Reading) a ring (0118 976 0088). He has about 100 or so used and ex demo Ifor Williams 750kg trailers for sale, starting at £550.
  16. Had a different experience with a similar outcome. A couple of winters ago my lorry broke down whilst on a demo tour of the south west. I had over £50K of kit on the back and had broken down on a secluded private road that led to, amoungst other places, a halfway house for reforming scallies on their way back from HM Holiday Parks. The cab heater had failed, the usual driver had knicked the sleeping back and it dropped to minus 4. I eventually dozed off for an hour, sat in the drivers seat leaning against the door frame. When I woke up my ear felt a tad strange. I rubbed my earlobe and all the skin just slid off it! Early frostbite that was too. Bloody painful for a week afterwards but it only went purple, not black!!
