  1. A nice little Acer with very little stem! Another Acer that has artistic stems...
  2. I was at Batsford Arboretum, Cotswolds and it was very windy on the ridge tops. I was a little off piste as I spotted a copse of really old gnarled Beech and Oak that I was going to have a nosey at. As I approached a limb tore out of an oak about 30cm dia and although it was spectacular to watch I did a quick U-turn back into the arboretum. That limb fall is a 1st for me!
  3. Some little traces of fungi I picked up at the weekend in Bristol on the Clifton Downs then at Batsford Arboretum in the Cotswolds.....enjoy the scenery
  4. Can I just say a massive thanks to the response I have had for this offer. It has been immense and I am humbled by all of the kind offers. I sent the details to the 1st in the queue of offers to make it fair. If the job remains open I hope to pass this on to the next in line. Fine show of commaraderie gents - thanks :thumbup1:
  5. Thanks mate I have already passed on details but very grateful for your response today.

  6. Met a nice old couple in Devizes today who eavesdropped a conversation I was having about tree work. They asked me if I could come and survey and do some work on the trees around their retirment home (sounded quite vast). I told them I was not from their neck of the woods and would offer it up on this site. If you are genuinely interested drop me a PM and I will give you their details. Thanks AT!
  7. I can't comment only to say that it is quite unusual to do a Bin collection on a bank holiday
  8. Looked on your website and am mightily impressed. Do you do bespoke furniture? I live not too far away.....
  9. Sounds like a little bit of scare mongering by the Mirror me thinks Need a science techie to tell us why this pollen is more dangerous than any other pollen. Large quantities may cause a little discomfort but my car is parked under a Birch Tree and has done so for 7 years and I have no evidence of corrosion :001_tt2:
  10. Cheers trooper. Here's another for you. this Birch (Betula sp) was ring barked to make a monolith when carrying out some woodland management. I ask you not to consider the tree only the mechanics as it was a tough choice to make anyway. Accept that in my opinion it had to make room for others to mature and to provide a wood pasture. So this was ringed in Feb 2010 and only yesterday I went to see what flora was popping up and to make sure the area was fenced for the incoming cattle to mow down birch scrub when I noticed the tree had a full flush in the crown! Is this because of stored energy in the trunk as from my knowledge of trees she has no interconnecting xylem or phloem vessels at the point of severance? :confused1:
  11. Well obviously they did not grow it on purpose but as they rent out holiday villas it became a talking point after a few bottles of red! And that is when they usually sucomb to trying one
  12. In my opinion I find this tree (or is it two and how do I tell?) (Fraxinus excelsior) satisfyingly 'safe' however as it is next to a kiddies outdoor forest school and near to a public permissive right of way I have been asked to make an appraisal by the owner. My initial thoughts are that the tree is hiding a crack within the union at the bifurcated junction. It appears to be laying down sufficient wood to hold the union? However the tree is suppressed by other trees in very close proximity hence the poor crown and very leggy stems. I would value some expert advice please
  13. All saved - cheers trooper and thanks for the help....I am in need of more and will post it soon. Just trying to find a suitable thread to ask the question.....
  14. Excellent example of what is out there in the sticks! Happy days......
  15. Here's a chimera from Puglia, Italy. It is in our friends garden growing Oranges and Grapefruit on the same tree. However, neither fruit is viable and they taste yuk! In Italy it is called albero della meraviglia‏
  16. Grateful to you and Hama. Downloaded the 'red bit' and copied to file for future reference. Interesting stuff and something I will take in my brain on future site visits.
  17. Thank you, I was having difficulty pinning this one down
  18. Managed to convince the Wildlife Trust in keeping this as a monolith last year and I checked up on her yesterday to find that she is sprouting epicormics on her trunk. We left the giraffes on to give her a fighting chance and bingo! The beasties and birds love it!
  19. If anyone in the Warsash (SO postcode area) would like to dispose of some woodchip rather than take it to the tip my wife has a customer that wants a pond filling in. She needs about 2 cubic meters and is happy that it gets dumped in her driveway. PM if you can help. Thanks
  20. Big b*****s though and noisy in flight. Seen them a few times especially around the Buddlejia sp in big parks near woodland and water.
  21. I know it is massive tree but this is just superb - Cyrtostachys renda the Sealing Wax Palm
