  1. I've only ever had gravity machines. I'm fairly small time when it comes to tree work. No climbing and no big stuff - CS30/31 only. You're right, sharp blades are everything. You have to fight to slow them down when they're sharp - once blunt it would be quicker to cut it up with loppers! I'll look up the modified 13/75. That sounds interesting. TW could make a lot of money out of your improvements. Surely that sort of info from guys in the field are what they need?!
  2. I just did a verbal deal on a CS100 - 18hp electric start 2014 model that looks quite tidy. No trailer but I can come up with something to get me started. I'm paying £3400 for it, which is pretty much every penny I have! It seemed like a fair deal though and the big engine is supposed to be worth te extra money? Edit - thanks Dan, the Facebook search did it
  3. I thought as much! What should I be looking to pay for a well used but not ruined machine?
  4. I should add that price for the Greenmech was a used machine! I think, looking at the specs, that a Jo-Beau could be a better bet. It's 75kg lighter than the Greenmech. 120kg is a much easier two man lift than 195kg! Edit... I missed the last couple of replies whilst typing. The Arblease thing is tempting, and that sort of payment would be easy enough. I spend more than that on curry!
  5. Most of my uses would be for a narrow access type machine. I'm more a gardener than full time arb and getting it into gardens would be helpful. I have an Entec Trukloder at the moment but for it's size I could have one of these little machines on a trailer and that would do the same job, whilst allowing me to wheel it round if needed. I'm tempted by a finance deal but I'm not a fan of interest!
  6. Hi guys. I'm in the position now to seriously consider buying a small chipper. I'm looking at the Greenmech CS100, Jo-Beau M300 and also the GTM... The GTM seems to be much better priced and would be easier to afford. But will it last? If I go for one of the others I'll have to buy used, but even that seems dear. My local Greenmech dealer is selling a CS100 and trailer, but he wants £5080+vat! That's (considerably) more than I paid for my pickup! I know there's no point in buying junk and may just have to get over it. What sort of prices have you chaps paid for this sort of kit recently? Is the £5k+ a reasonable one?
  7. I just got an email back from Hycrack. £160+vat gets me a new shaft and bearing set. Not too bad. I think I might just order that!
  8. I'm thinking that I really should try to repair mine. I was just getting the funds together for a little chipper for tight access. I need that more than the splitter and can't really afford both
  9. Bugger! Although that does kind of help me to justify the extra cost of the Hycrack. Parts backup is handy. Doesn't help you though! I've bought a length of bar to machine down in my lathe. Only down side is I can't really temper it accurately but I will have a go. If it breaks again it's not a big deal.
  10. Thanks for the replies chaps. I'll look into that. It does seem that this age of machine had quite a narrow table on it, so I'm tempted to use this as an excuse to upgrade to the wide one they do now. I'll weigh up the prices, but it's great to hear that it can be fixed! Jon - would you be doing it up to sell on or using it yourself if I passed it on to you?
  11. Hi chaps. I was splitting some logs with my Hycrack today and managed to snap the shaft going into the cone! Usually the shear pin breaks but this time it was a thin piece of wood that got between the table and the cone. As it went in I had the feeling it wasn't going to end well and sure enough, it didn't! The problem is, it's also cracked the bearing, so just a new shaft isn't going to sort the problem. I reckon it could be a write off! Has anyone else experienced this? Also, if anyone here has one they don't use, how much do you want for it? Think I may need a new one!
  12. Thanks for all your replies chaps. And thank you Richie for your offer of letting me try your saw. I'm not sure what I have against A/T? I guess I'm not a heavy user of saws like you guys and my kit ages more than wears out. I've got one of the first MS660's in the shed - can't remember the purchase date but it was just after they changed over from the 0's. It's done maybe 20 hours from new. I just don't trust electronic kit to sit around in the shed over that sort of time and not go belly up! I'd love a 242 or similar. But they seem impossible to find and are so old now that they're all well used. I suppose an 026 would do, but I really do want to try another Husky. I've got a pair of Stihls and a Husky pole saw, so another Husky would be nice. I too am a bit niggled by the Stihl selling by post policy. It's just silly.
  13. I fancy getting myself a little Husqvarna for cutting up to 12" logs and general light ground work. I'm not a full time pro but don't want a domestic saw. What's their best sub 50cc offering? Oh, and this autotune sounds pants. I like mechanical stuff, not computers! I understand I should brace myself for a dozen different answers but hey, one day I might make my mind up and actually buy one!
  14. I've sold a couple that I miss. My first saw, which was a Husky 254xp and then my Stihl MS260. Both were lovely saws, the 254 probably the best of the pair. Now I'm looking for a saw of a similar size and don't know what to buy!
  15. Well it is a Unimog, and I do have garden all the way around the house. If they wanted to be silly about it I could use the house as a roundabout! Seriously though. I can drive in forwards, reverse into where it's parked and drive out again forwards without needing to use the road. If all they're worried about is the danger of reversing on to or off of the road, then I'm ok. And it's not a big vehicle. My Ford Ranger pickup is longer by quite a margin! Where can I find the details of the O licence? I've got it registered and insured as a classic tractor at the moment, but that's only going to be legal until it's restored and being used for work. Then I'll need to sort it properly even though I'll only use it a couple of times per month. Does distance travelled count for anything? It rarely goes more than five miles from home!
  16. The bit that niggles me, from what I can see of it anyway, is that to come off of ag use you need an O licence. A vehicle requiring an O licence can't be stored at home? So my little U900 couldn't be kept on my drive at the side of the house where it bothers nobody, but next door's chuffing great camper van that blocks the whole view from my living room window can be parked on theirs?! Well they can do one. Not happening.
  17. Are we talking a U1300 or an ex military 1300L? The 1300 should already have hydraulics so you'd simply plug the rams in to the relevant spools. A 1300L doesn't come with that so you would need the hydraulic system too. I don't know for sure that it will fit but I can't see why it wouldn't? It's a belt driven pump so should just bolt on. A steering pump won't have anywhere near the flow rate to do the job. It would take you a lifetime just to lift the arms!
  18. I've been mulling over an Eliet Major for a while now. I currently run a 4" towed gravity feed machine but find it's a bit hard work with big wood and a bit hard work with hedge cuttings. I've got a lad who hires me in to shred waste every time he gets a big job on and it's usually all stuff that's been hand pruned, roses, viburnum etc. I'm now thinking a pto machine for the mog and something like the Eliet would do me well. Does anyone use an Eliet minor? It's a big cost saving new and the maximum diameter isn't that much smaller. It's just how fast it pulls things through that I'm worried about. Obviously bigger is better, but how much better?!
  19. Has anyone else been tempted by this? I'm not a big fan of finance but if it's interest free then it's not so bad. I'm thinking of a new PTO150H - the prices are very reasonable. Are there any other makers with this deal running? I quite like the look of the Greenmech machine that's a similar size - side feed means it's very compact as far as vehicle length is concerned. I'm thinking it would be the best to sit on the front of the mog, although the TW isn't huge. Should I, shouldn't I?
  20. I'd run it from the RB. Diesel is cheaper than petrol and it's one less engine to have to have a service routine for. Sorry you lost your last splitter this way. Stealing a man's living is the lowest of the low.
  21. I forgot to say - thanks for all your replies. You never know I might find another TP760 at a later date so the info is useful. My mog does have a 540/1000rpm box on it, but I can see how that speed up gear could be handy for some. I wonder if it would have the torque to run in 1000rpm and use this box, so you'd get really good speed at tickover for small brash!
  22. Well chaps, it looks like a moment to brace yourselves for "Got myself a chipper take 3"... I've been talking to a mate up north and it's just what he needs. My mog linkage still needs work and I don't have a banana box for the pto, so I've passed the deal over to him rather than have it sit in my garage for months. It was a bargain too:001_rolleyes:
  23. I managed to source myself another chipper - again not local but I'm having it picked up by a bloke who knows what he's looking at so all should be well. I am however a bit baffled by the specs. It was listed on ebay as a 10", but I thought the TP760 was only 6-8"? The hopper comes off to one side and the frame has a towing pin on it so you can chip into the mog or trailer, although you wouldn't want to tow too much weight I wouldn't have thought. The seller seems to think it weighs about 1.5t, which sounds like a lot! I thought it was the older version of the tp200 sized machine? I'll have it and it'll work either way, but is it really that heavy?
  24. I took the local dealer route in the end. Told them the hp of the mog and will leave them to decide what I need. Although I have used the small shaft on the mog on a home made frame, I'm not sure it's really up to it long term. I'll keep the small shaft to run on the tractor, although I think I'll be selling it soon as I have very limited use for it. It's got a tidy little under belly mower so will bung it on ebay in the spring when the grass is growing and plenty of kit will have died over winter! Having tried the Hycrack on some ash that I have here I've decided it's easier to use the axe on good wood! I can do it just as quickly by hand and won't have to pay for diesel. I'll save the splitter for the pile of axe resistant logs that I always seem to accumulate! How good are the smaller hydraulic splitters? I don't suppose I can go too big due to the flow rate of my pump. Pretty sure it's about 45lpm.
  25. I might just buy a new shaft from Hycrack to save bother. The only issue I have is that I cut the original shaft to fit my little Kubota compact and I now want to use it on my Unimog. It's too short...
