Ha looks can be deceiving if you reckon she's cute! Rescue dog...absolute pain in the arse with others dogs, if given a choice would hang off the neck of the nearest large dog, growling all the time! Bless....! Bit old to change her ways now sadly.
  2. Yes, beetles are very particular about their habitat. Some species aren't fussy but some like very specific environments. Some would love a pile of wood on the ground, others wouldn't be interested at all. One of my jobs is extracting beetle remains from environmental archaeological samples in order to reconstruct past environments- it is possible to do this only because of how specific beetles are about where they live.

Thank you. Just a Kodak M320, it's a pretty basic compact digital camera. Nice photos Lee thanks for posting.
  4. Got a camera for Christmas so took a walk up to the wood with the dog and tried it out.
  5. I think we have moved on a little from a purely Darwinistic view- I suspect Skyhuck has too?
  6. As I said in another post it might be worth a look at some of the more recent related stuff, Jablonka and co. Again, not saying I agree but just that some ideas may be relevant.
  7. Thanks, yes I commented on your picture thread. That photo is...errr...slightly frightening! Thankfully the trees I have in mind are smaller!
  8. MonkeyD, what was the thinking behind using an axe? Interesting pics, thanks.
  9. Thank you both for the info, much appreciated! I have an area of trees approx. 12 years old so hopefully will be able to do something with them.
  10. Excellent, that suits the area I have in mind very well then!
  11. How young? I am interested in setting up some pollard or coppice areas in woodland.
  12. Wow I make sense to someone- I guess there's a first time for everything! Yes, hopefully he will!
  13. Can anyone enlighten me about my earlier questions? How old are trees usually (as a minimum) before they can be pollarded? How does pollarding relate to coppicing in terms of suitable tree species and also habitat offered for fungi/beetles etc? As well as eventual timber output?
  14. Also the later book 'The Extended Phenotype' may be of interest, also recent research by Jablonka (sp?!) and similar. I'm not saying I agree with all of this- just that Hamadryad may find it brings a few interesting ideas into the equation.
  15. ''If I understand the selfish gene theory correctly that suggests that even the seemingly most selfless act is done with motivation of gain for the one performing the act.'' More that evolution is selection of genes, and only genes, rather than the resultant characteristics (phenotype). The point I felt was relevant is that this is in terms of genes, rather than the 'act' of an individual- plant or animal. So perpetuation of an individual resulting in more offspring, therefore more copies of each of the genes passed on. Hamadryad said ''Imortality in trees has distinct advantages, How many offspring could YOU produce? victorians managed about 14 before it kiled them in childbirth!'' I felt the relevance here is looking in terms of the advantage of longer life on a gene basis rather than individual/species basis. Am I making any sense at all?! I fear not!
  16. I thought the relevance of it in terms of seeing evolution from the point of view of the gene rather than the organism may add something to the development of his ideas. I understand from what he has said it is still very much a thought in process.
  17. I thought the book would be quite relevant Skyhuck, in particular to the discussion on page 6 of this thread.
  18. Having tried to read and make the best sense I can of this thread, can I suggest Hamadryad that you read a book (if you haven't already) called 'The Selfish Gene'. I have a feeling it may be relevant to the theory you are thinking about developing.
  19. Yes I am perpetually fascinated by the links between several of my areas of interest that initially seem totally unrelated.
  20. I will be back later as have to go out but lots of questions to ask. How old are trees usually (as a minimum) before they can be pollarded? How does pollarding relate to coppicing in terms of suitable tree species and also habitat offered for fungi/beetles etc? As well as eventual timber output? Sorry for the 'noob' questions- do feel free to direct me to reading on the subject if you'd like a discussion with someone who has more of a clue what they are on about!
  21. Um... wow? Lost for any other words, fantastic photos.
  22. He is very interesting, such unusual preservation (sorry, I am an archaeologist by qualification...). Fungi does make good tinder though. The oak? Don't ask me, completely unqualified to say- uh a branch fell off?!
