  1. It was fairly 'new' pine, but didn't spit half as much as I was expecting, I reckon an old wheel rim, up-turned. would serve as a holder if one was concerned about embers falling etc. Incidentally, after about 2 hours of burning outside, I picked the thing up whilst wearing welding gloves, chucked it in the fire place and it continued burning 'till the following afternoon!
  2. Certainly seems it was the 'sappy, gluey stuff' that got the one pictured going, Bob.
  3. Told a Portuguese friend about it today...he says the old boys round here have been doing that to stumps for a while. Seems the harder the wood, the longer the burn, seasoning doesn't seem to enter the equation.
  4. Hey Joe. That was a lump of Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) and I think I felled the tree last week.....it was a fairly 'new' log anyway.
  5. Here's one I made last night........... http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1994/06112009750.jpg Definately thinking of selling 'em, maybe €15 with a small bag of kindling and instructions?
  6. 11mm Blaze on the Lockjack seems to be fine, but it's running through a Rope Guide, so I'm not getting the 'furryness' I would have with no cambium saver or Guide. I'm not too good with the Lockjack yet, so 'subtle adjustments' are out of the question!
  7. We have to fell the big Canary Island Plams in quarters 'cos most are over a meter in diameter and the bloody stuff is horrible to cut through! Awsome vid, incidentally, makes our 'dismantle sectionaally and fell to ground levels' look a bit tame!
  8. When searching for anything on eBay, it's sometimes a good idea to use Fat Fingers ( FatFingers - eBay typos, misspelling & spelling mistakes ) This handy tool works out every possible way of spelling what you're looking for, so if someone has posted this lovely trailer, for example, ... Lider twin axel commercial trailer with full mesh kit on eBay (end time 07-Nov-09 11:43:17 GMT) they're unlikely to get as many people looking as if it was spelt correctly. Seems a good way to pick up bargains?
  9. 'Blaze' and Lockjack....Mmmmm, lovely! Fast, no sit-back to speak of and nice to work on with the swivel. However, I also use the Hitchclimber System and have found it very adaptive to different situations, esp. re-directs and having the groundy pull up the 660 for me!
  10. 79kg.... Incidentally, it was 'She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed's birthday 2 months ago, she asked for something that would go from 0-150 in 3 seconds............I got her a set of bathroom scales! Ow!!! She's just come into my 'den' and was reading this!!!!!!!!!
  11. Don't know Gibbon. I'll tell you tomorrow if I can get me hands on enough!
  12. Oh, and the fruit tastes not bad as long as you eat the really red ones
  13. You don't want to eat the fruit, Adam, you want to DISTILL it! That's what the old boys do here, makes the local 'firewater' called Medronho. The good stuff tates ok, quite fruity, but get a bad 'un and you'll have a headache for days.
  14. Second one down looks like Ironwood / Horsetail Tree (Casuarina equisetifolia)
  15. Thanks to the both of you. I'll try 'em tomorrow or Monday.
  16. I'm probably gonna need some bits for a Command Pro 25 as the Rayco grinder it sits on parted company with it's trailer the other day whilst going round a roundabout! Tried Googling but only seem to find US sites. Does anyone know a dealer in the UK or Europe? On the up-side......What build quality on these Raycos! Seriously over-engineered in places but that steel can take some knocks! The thing came to rest after sliding down the road on it's fuel tank and the only damage was to the road! Anyway, any pointers much appreciated.
  17. Hey! Who is you?......You's not Nik is you? If you are, at least you know the Norwegian for tree care!

  18. Hey Adam! How-s it going in Jolly Old Blighty? I speak to kevin every so often (nearly bought his damn cherry picker last week!) Stay well and send more funnies.

  19. Hi Hollands. Take the advertising, if it is a realatively small fee. School newsletters are read by other family members of the kids, they may live in areas that you cover and, as long as you're the only tree firm in there, you may gain a bit of kudos and be seen as 'the school's tree contractor' You have obviously left a good impression as they keep contacting you, capitalise on that and expand you operation into other areas. Also, school's staff talk to other school's staff, if you're seen as the best contractor for this type of work, other school gates may open!
  20. Hi David. Could be the engine running too fast or too slow (anyone been fiddling with the throttle stop?) Easy way to check (although a two-man job) is take off both side panels; fire up the chipper and crank revs to full; press green button to start feed rollers; locate the electronic gubins near the hydraulic valve (can't remember if it's on left or right); on top of this should be a clear plastic cube with a red LED in it; One man adjusts throttle (faster or slower - not too fast as engine over-run protection will stop engine!) until other man sees LED comes on; No-stress should now be set up.
  21. As part of my (rather sloppy ) weekly checks, I failed to notice a split in the hydraulic hose that feeds the top roller. As you may be able to see in the pic, the stainless steel inner sheath of the pipe had worn away the bottom right corner of the hole on the bodywork where the pipe passes through. The bodywork then fought back and holed the pipe. Had to shut down machine and chuck the brash on the truck in an 'old-school' stylie!(the bit of old garden hose and cable ties was put on on site to stop fluid dripping onto client's driveway) New pipe is now fitted and I've cut away some bodywork and edged it in rubber to allow for pipe vibration. Just something to be aware of. http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/8544/18092009693.jpg
  22. You're welcome any time ............ bring your harness!!
  23. Hey Baz. Thanks for the encouragement! Got a little side-tracked into our local bar (90 cents a beer) so work on chipper postponed for this afternoon..............mainly 'cos I can't tell whether there are 2 bolts or 4 and can barely find the machine even though I know it's a big orange thing! Gonna set about it tomorrow in the heat of the day so if I have no joy I'll probably disturb you if necessary during Monday. Thanks again.
  24. Thanks for all the advice. Not sure how the blades are sharpened, just give them to this little engineer fella and a week later he's got 'em so you can shave with 'em! They are getting near the wear mark though so that may be a contributing factor. Before we attempt hopper and lower feed roller (forgot that that needed to happen as well and that is a bugger of a job!) I think I'll give the supplier in Lisbon a call and ask how long the anvil should last before turning/replacing. I'll let you know how it goes.
