  6. Having read all the info on Phytopthora Alni on Forestry Comm site I'm inclined to agree with RobArb. All the symptoms point in that direction. I never realised however how much of a problem it actually was in this country. A very informative pdf attached. If i wanted 100% confirmation where would i send a sample to? Alice Holt? Thanks for all input. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/pdf/fcin6.pdf/$FILE/fcin6.pdf

  10. Had a look at this Alder.....According to the gardner is was pruned (quite heavily) about 3 years ago and has consequently been in decline ever since. It has a very sparse crown now with small leaves and has started shedding branches. Im guessing that the reduction coincided with either (a) a period of drought.....which it has never had the resources to recover from or (b) it has been infected with Phytophthora (possibly Phytophthora x cambivora) THe leading candidate In my humble opinion. The tree is earmarked for removal as there is very little foliage this year. Any thoughts please very welcome.

Bad news.......one of its limbs took a battering in the wind resulting in a beautiful natural fracture.......the good news....i finally get to climb a tree i drive past often and have wanted to climb for ages..... You can see the failed limb standing on its tips in the right of the picture.....and the resulting fracture in others.....
