  1. I gotta keep paying him extra cos he doesn't get the job done by 4.30. Hows that work?
  2. Ive got a cabstar tipper, M reg, out of MOT but it was used daily till January this year. Open to offers as its just parked in the yard.
  3. Nice sign writing. Are you going to do my Canter too?
  4. The FO say the country as a whole is safe, but the area specificallly we are headed to has had quite a few problems which they say have been getting worse latley Anyway gonna book the ticket tomorrow for 20th March, just got to hope for good swell.
  5. Same trip. Just started spinning out a bit when I read the Foriegn office website. Wifey and daughter are staying home, looks like I will be doining it alone, no takers yet.
  6. I did a job for some guys in a nature reserve in The Gambia last year. We got on good and have kept in touch. This year they have invited me on a surf trip to surf a piont break they recently discovered in Southern Senegal. The only problem is that the foriegn office advise against all travel to the area due to land mines, armed rebels and a real chance of kidnapping. I've done a fair bit of travelling and have been to Senegal briefly before, my contacts down there assure me its safe. Would you go?
  7. Do you really think that it would survive pollarding? My feelings are that it would not. Even if it did survive, the extreme foliage loss would surley hasted the fungi's destruction of the tree.
  8. A guy who worked for me recommended TRADMASTARNA. Another firm who regularly adverise (He wasn't called Mike Hill btw) for climbers in Norway was a bad payer and a bad boss so he tells me. 1 week trial the way to go for sure
  9. Thanks for your input. For a brief break down, the idea is only to generate an extra few man days to keep the guys busy in what could be a quiet summer. I have 2 garden centers who would pay £1.50 per bag for composted chipping. (SWB, which are good for both retaining soil moisture and adding humus to soil, far better than coloured bark chipping which do FA) I reckon I can get 75-100 bags on a truck at a time and deliver to within 5 mile radius of my yard. Easy 200 bags a day filled and delived for 1 guy do you reckon?
  10. Ha, used one years back when I was PAYE. The one we had was the worst thing I have ever used. Crap enginge, horrible to drive, always breaking down, didn't carry load well and rusted like FXXK. If you can cope with the MPG I would get a Canter or Isuzu. At least these vans are biggger trucks down rated to 3.5t rather than a panel van with a modified back and uprated springs
  11. I am thinking of bagging some composted chip and trying to market it commercially. Idea would be to sell 100 or so 70l bags at a time wholesale. Does anyone have experience of this? What thickness bag is recomended and how much per bag?
  12. Just got a 3l turbo canter a few weeks back. Seems to be a good solid truck that carry's the weight well, BUT it is awfull on fuel, much worse than my 2.5l turbo transit. I reckon I get about 20 miles to the gallon.
  13. Dropped some ourselves the other week, easy enoungh. Were just running into the clients house and as always BT werent playing the game.
  14. Dunno about you guys, but my working at height assesment starts with, "can suitable work postioning be acheived?". If the tree structure is deemed safe to climb, is safe work positioning is acheivable and the operative is suitability trained then (imo) no mewp is needed. I would only consider using one if the answer to any of the above is no.
  15. I reckon my Fig is still reining supreme. Pussys
  16. That video had the winch on though. If I was rigging down a Volvo I would switch to the bollard
  17. I would try to re-arrange work to get it done in Feb or leave it till the end of the summer. If its just a tickle you may be alright, otherwise it will be a scrambled egg special.
  18. Looked at a little pine at an indoor tennis center a few years ago. Would have had to go across 3 courts, up stairs and out through reception, or across a flat roof which they wouldn't have. Priced up the long drag but the trees still there. I take it a crane wouln't reach? Drop chipper and stump grinder in and lift out and use chipping on site. Half a day crane hire may only be £200-£250. May be preferable to bringing dirt into a hospital.
  19. I will take my Strangler Fig and destroy all of your Holm Oaks, Hawthorns, Willows or any other contenders. Surely the king of the forest.
  20. Whats up with the soil level? Pictures 1 and 3 don't look to unusual but picture 2 looks like the tree has been buried. Have you ever applied Smiley and Fraedrich’s formula for stregnth loss ofopen cavities?

Yeah single line. We started doing on on rainforest trees cos we didn't have a rope long enough for a normal system.

One of my guys got this ticket for £35 during a 40 or 41 assesment which ever it is. I think its worthwhile to get proper training on lowering devices and a ticket if its cheap. Better than learning from a climber shouting instructions from the tree. Also if ever there was an accident its further evidence of proper training. He was however the first guy to do it with the training centre so they probably don't do many

2 singles with a foot loop and d ring sling on the lower. Ive seen more fancy set ups but I was shown this set up 6 or 7 years ago and it still works ok for me.

I use 2 singles. I know icould foot lock, but for me it saves a lot of energy to use the asscenders and allows rapid access for a rescue

2 asscenders are a vital bit of kit if you regularly access big trees, imo
