  6. Thanks, glad your inspired, I am looking for some inspiration right now as I have my first comp the English open sat, sun, mon at Tatton Park. I will be up against a lot of long term pros. I can see me sticking to what i like best and thats Dragons. I will post some pics next week when I'm back. Thanks for the comments, Tommy.
  7. Thanks Steve, I do have a bit of a stash A few large pieces of Yew, and I have wood stashed on a few golf courses down south but I need a wagon. Theres a thought' I am wanting some advice on buying a small wagon with a crane for bringing wood home and maybe delivering big carvings. I only have a car licence. Any help?
  8. Ahhh, I hear its nice and soft to carve but is a long lasting wood' Thanks, tommy
  9. Great Sculptor, where do you buy these cheap sanding discs
  10. Nice carving, For a smoother finish you can get a fullhouse chain, this chain has a cutter on every link. Sthil are now selling a special 1/4 pitch carving chain, otherwise with the normal 1/4 pitch you have to grind the heels of the cutter down thats if you are using the dime tip bar! Thuja, I have not heard of this wood is it a soft or hardwood? Thanks, Tommy
  11. This was my piece at the Wales woodfest, two and a half days carving Thanks, these are my kids Thomas and Becky, Here is a link to my website a friend has put togeather for me, he is a bit slow in updating it but if you click on the bottom link of the main page it will take you to another site where i have a gallery. Thanks again, Tommy http://castlesidecarvings.com/index.html
  12. Thanks, I would like to find a piece of Yew that big, its Western Sequioa.
  13. I did and i think most carvers started with mushrooms, using any wood you want really I found most carvers prefer Douglas fir or if you can get your hands on it Western Sequioa if you are going to use a softwood, but you can charge more for a carving if its a hardwood like oak, all you guys here will know what kind of wood lasts outdoors the longest and thats a factor to think about.
  14. Thanks, I had to hollow the top out which was tricky the doorway that was the bottom cut, They are thinking of putting a rope ladder up for there two little girls to climb up, I have stressed that the will also need a gate! I was pretty scared myself up there and i'm 44, LOL. Thanks, Tommy
  15. This was my first carving, carved with my 362 15" bar. It sold and so did another 100 or more! I soon got sick and moved on to seashellls, Still with the standard bar I was wondering how the other carvers were carving the great stuff i was finding on the net! Found out about the carving bar, and that was it i was away. Although my stuff was improving i stiil spent a lot of the time improving the carving with the grinder and Arbortech mini grinder. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pricing=INC&pf_id=21314&filter_cat=&manufacturer_id=Arbortech&name=&user_search=&sfile=1&jump=0&cid=HRRNE3WFB7OJEKO6FE1ZYTJZAKTDAPMC I also have an electric Bosh chisel which is a nice tool, I dont have one yet but Makita do a straight grinder which you can get all kinds of different bits to use for detailing. I will be buying one but a dremmel i was given will do for now. I have found that with a lot of practice i am getting better with the saw and the shaping and sanding is getting less. I have been carving part time for two years now and this is where I am at now, still learning but improving. Cheers, Tommy.
