  1. Take the roof off and rain will rapidly do the rest by the sound of it...
  2. I heard that too, though it was in the context of big buildings, old factories and warehouses etc. Shame; it leads to far too many examples of beautiful Victorian industrial architecture getting demolished. Must be a higher environmental cost to rebuilding versus renovation as well.
  3. Climate change: IPCC report warns of ‘irreversible’ impacts of global warming WWW.BBC.CO.UK IPCC scientists outline a harrowing summary of climate impacts already hurting people and species.
  4. Deranged is the word that I keep hearing. I heard an interview on the wireless today, with some guy who's known him for years and years, an ex-colleague, politician or KGB officer or something. I was only half listening but one of the questions was "has he always been like this", (mentally unstable, unpredictable etc)? The answer was "no, he is evolving", rapidly corrected to "devolving", towards insanity. Another question was something like;- well won't others within govnt or the system stop him going too far, with nuclear weapons for instance? "No, you don't understand, there is no-one else. He is the only one, everyone else in Russia does exactly as he says, or gets removed to prison or worse. Lovely. Something for us all to look forward to.
  5. It's all just a demonstration of good old fashioned Christian values. [emoji12]
  6. I'd say it's more Monty Python, but I take your point. There's been a general Nazi proliferation of late.
  7. How religious are British people? | YouGov YOUGOV.CO.UK A quarter of Britons say they believe in ‘a god’. Four in ten neither believe in ‘a god’ nor in a ‘higher power’ what+percentage+of+the+uk+is+christian+2021 - Recherche Google WWW.GOOGLE.COM Around half (51.0%) of the population reported their religion as Christian in England and Wales, a decrease of nearly 8.3 percentage points since the 2011 Census; No religion (including not stated), was the second most common response, increasing just over 6.1 percentage points from 32.3% in 2011 to 38.4% in 2019. Seems like there's barely any predominance nowadays in the UK as a whole. Looking at it on a more local scale though, I'm sure you'd find that there was, but it wouldn't be Christian.
  8. Gyms are never going to be net producers of electricity but they could surely move more towards being self-sufficient at least in terms of energy needs. Their function is to facilitate human exercise. Which is basically just the transfer of energy from a chemical form, fat, to other forms such as heat and motion. These could then be harnessed or transfered to another form; electricity. All those machines don't have to be powered from an external source, they could be fitted with an alternator to allow the action of the user pedalling/running/rowing/lifting to generate enough electricity to run a few lights or a screen or whatever. (Or giant hamster wheel if you like!) In a similar vein. Where's the sense in all those overweight people driving to the gym? They'd be far better off walking, running or cycling there. (They'd also save all that fuel and reduce all the pollution the rest of us have to breath in.) Then the car parks could be better utilised as spaces to install solar panels, ground source heat pumps, wind turbines, micro-nuclear reactors, plant biomass ........... as appropriate!
  9. "Interesting" is one way to put it. If they can actually work as an alliance against the West then we are well and truly screwed. No energy and no manufactured goods could be just the start of it.
  10. Thank you. That answers my question. So even if they don't reuse the nest there's still mileage in leaving the old one, in case they want to recycle it. They're always in the garden so probably keen to nest here or nearby. That does look like a nice book.
  11. Good question. They both look to be much of a muchness. I've got the Multisaver and very happy with it.
  12. I need to do something similar. I currently have a void beside the sofa where I need to put cups or glasses. Great looking slab of walnut too.
  13. Great idea for a thread @John87. Much appreciated.
  14. Condolences for your loss. A horrible situation at the best of times, it really shouldn't have been so much harder for you. You did the best for your Mum, you should rest assured. We lost my father to a mystery paralysing illness a few years ago. I have to say that the hospital/medical side of it was good. He was lucky to get some top notch doctors. I'm aware that it could have been so much worse though. It does seem to be a real postcode lottery. And timing plays a part, it's got a lot worse over the last two years. I feel for anyone going through something similar this year or last. The social care side was abysmal. We had to fight like hell to get him some respite care towards the end; basically to give my poor Mum a rest. Perversely it was also a struggle to get him home again for the final chapter. For whatever reasons the system really is broken.
  15. I used this for my chopping board. Brandon Bespoke 100% Pure Mineral Oil 250ml - Chopping Board Oil - Food Safe WWW.EBAY.CO.UK Pure Mineral Oil 250ml – Food Safe. The high quality Pure Mineral Oil penetrates into the wood, providing protection and revitalizes the wood’s natural colour and character. It will also prolong the life of the wood.
  16. Beautiful looking slab of Acacia that by the way. The fluted exterior as much as the nice grain. It'll look lovely when finished I reckon. What is it going to be?
  17. I'd fill again straight away and then sand. Just in case sanding dust gets in the way of the refill.
  18. Cheers. I used to have Niger seeds out all the time, but gave up when I was getting no takers. Thinking about it, maybe that was a problem; they were getting too stale. I'll give the feeder a good clean and try again with some new seeds. I normally have a mixed feed, sunflower hearts being one of the ingredients.
  19. Exactly. I've no particularly strong feelings about either. Foie gras is actually rather tasty. They should probably both be stopped really but they're very small issues in comparison to the whole factory farming/intensively reared livestock industry. I suppose fur, and leather, is worse if that's the only part of the animal that's used. If the meat isn't eaten as well then it's a waste. Worse still if it's wild animals being killed just for their fur.
  20. So Jacob Rees Mogg likes to eat foie gras, and his wife likes to wear fur. Surprise surprise. Ministers set to drop UK ban on foie gras and fur imports WWW.BBC.CO.UK The proposed measure is likely to be dropped from an animal welfare bill, after ministers raised concerns.
  21. Parisian Tree Surgeons were probably ahead of their time!
  22. It's a Munter Hitch I reckon.
  23. When did they start charging for it? I thought I remembered it being completely free, though I didn't take much notice as the company sorted it.
  24. I've used DraftSight quite a bit. I'd recommend it. A lot of the commands and interfaces are common or very similar to AutoCAD. I was working with factory layout drawings; importing/exporting, viewing and producing simple drawings. No idea what it's like for mapping work, but worth a look I reckon. There's the normal free trial version available, or you can pay for the real thing. It's not exactly cheap, but a damn sight cheaper than the extortionate AutoCAD! Draftsight: Powerful 2D Drawing, 3D Design and CAD Drafting Solution WWW.DRAFTSIGHT.COM World-class CAD software for 2D drawing and drafting. Greater performance and flexibility at the best price on the market.
