  1. Great idea we will be meeting at the Needles light house Isle of Wight can`t miss it as you come off the ferry turn right and keep going until you get to the cliff top. see you there we are going there now as they need the windows cleaning and some one wanted to practice a pole rescue!!!
  2. It is surprising what you can hold tight! 6 inch rounds no problem with our one . if you try below 3 inch logs you don`t need the saw just shear them off!! they do fly a bit so be warned
  3. I have built my own splitter, i used a piece of RSJ about 6inchs deep then fabricated a runner that slid on one side of RSJ with a flat push plate on that. Took and old Axe head and welded to a flat plate and bolted it to the rsj. join the flat plate to a 1inch diamater ram then a spool block and away you go. Another handy thing we found was you could pinch log size cord in the splitter and cut them up with a chainsaw always held tight.
  4. Not sure what region you are in but the utility companies could be a good route, they often have more £££`s behind them to support training than small Arb companies. Yes the work isn`t your big reductions or removals but it will give you masses of experiance and hopefully a good refferance to procced if utility arb isn`t for you. I know Scottish Southern Energy were looking for staff in the southern half of the country. If you need a contact number PM me and i will pass one on for you.
  5. :laola:Well Done Jim!!!! Great to hear a sucess even though it was a hard week. Had you climbed before you went on this course? Good luck with your next step!!!!!
  6. I got a nice discovery for sale on a P plate if anyone interested PM me . Don`t know the fella you bought yours from , thankgod!
  7. Respect for you trying mate. I am sort of in the same boat r.e limb walking, it is one of those things that really messes with your head. It`s all about trusting those anchor points and your gear, best way i found and quickest way of learning is getting into a tree with an expert who can help and encourage, done this with a lad at work and it made it all alot easyer. I struggle with my physical fittnes as well being 35 and a bit of a bloater. I wish i took it up when i was 17 rather than sitting on a tractor for 17 years . Just having ariel rescue would be a big result even if you don`t go on to cs39 , you would be a dam handy groundie for alot of surgeons. Keep the faith mate and put everything into tommorrow. good luck
  8. Richards dad is called Derek or Tubby Turner!! know Richard from the ploughing matches we used to do . don`t think there was a chap called Matt on our course it was all old fellas like me on our one, drove Tony mad!! I am sure there are lots of people we both know from around the area. I hope to be going up to APF as well this year could have a spare seat if your thinking of going. Look forward to meeting up soon!!
  9. Yea , met him when i took my 30/31 great fella, try to keep in touch with him and he lets me know when he has courses that i might be interested in, but now i am employed i get all my training through work . what about Tony from AJP urban forestry? Good friends with Tony P, he put me in touch with Tony Darb. Are you on bullington manor farm by any chance? I know most of the farmers round there as my back ground is Farming until i was made redundant last september then looked into saws and now working for SSE clearing powerlines.
  10. D-Day tommorrow? hope all is going well ! stick up the bits you are finding difficult or are unsure about , it will be good pointers for others like me due to take cs38 soon.
  11. Good, quick, communications is paramount. Even if things go wrong and you can`t do what you promised let the client know A.S.A.P Always been given positive feedback in regard to this. Tidy site and respect clients property , first on list.
  12. Yea next village south, about 2 miles from my HQ.
  13. Fine by me all i need is a bit of notice to get a permission and find out what you fellas want and job will be done. If the meet up being organised by Lee is to far then we could do one here for the hampshire, witshire area. I think you are about 6 miles from me Treewizard, i am near Goodworth Clatford. Lets see what Lee comes up with first and i hope we can all get to that one, i am up for filling a vehicle and sharing fuel if anyone fancies that.

    Common sense

R.I.P Common Sense I feel i knew him well and would love to keep his name ticking on in a world when he is often forgotten. Another reason dear old common sense has passed on is his great uncle GREED! has took over and trying to dominate the world!

    Tree Crime

Yea it will be fine it`s got a bit of green on it!! Also years ago pollarding oaks was standard practice, and the oaks natural pattern is to shed limbs and regrow so i am sure it will survive. Be very interesting to see a picture in 5 years time.
  16. how did the first day go Jim? will be taking mine in september fingers crossed
  17. good luck Jim sure you will be fine , you certainlly have the knowledge upstairs, just a case of puting it into practice.
  18. Hope this works this lady`s got a nice pair!!! stick me in please
  19. I could probablly provide a site . It would be a farm site with some decent trees around mainly beech. What does everyone think? Location would be 4 miles south of Andover. If this is a bit to far south what would the chances of getting permisson on Forestry commision ground? I was thinking of Savernake Forest near Marlbrough. they have BBQ sites there around the forest and a camp site !!! good location for most i think . I have a contact number for the Comission office at this site . What are your thoughts?

    Climbing help

i see he is but a bit to far from here, was hoping a few locals would be up for a clamber round here. thanks all the same
  21. Anyone interested in helping two newbies to further thier climbing knowledge . I am thinking of someone who might like to join up with us and have a climb and help us out. We are hoping to take our Ariel Rescue course in september. We both live around Andover, Hampshire so local would be good Thanks Stoxs
  22. If i am quick enough i would love that please Tony
  23. Always treat Electricity wires as live unless proven dead and earthed!!! There are many different setups for street lights so don`t take the risk. You will need approved and tested PPE and equipment to work near live conductors, I.E insulated rods and tested insulated gloves. Not sure what work you want to do but if trees are in contact with wires you should never climb them and only work from ground until a vicinity zone of at least 1.5m is obtained. My advice is get someone who is qualified to do this sort of work , LIFE WILL BE TO SHORT.
