  1. I've been looking for a suitable harness for my 5 year old stepson, and have thought full harness might be good. DMM and Petzl do them. What looks better is the New Tribe kids harness, not a full harness, but well padded and in use at a few other experience/workshop venues. There is a place in Cornwall that does the kind of courses you are referring to and it might be worth checking them out regarding techniques/insurance. Mighty Oak - tree climbing in cornwall good luck
  2. couple of years experience and own kit, I can get over to hull quite easily if theres anything available.
  3. just take the magnets off the side of the van....
  4. oh - i should have scrolled down first....
  5. Stickers are definately a good plan. Stickers get stuck and people see them. choose a design thats simple, nice to look at, and has a contact detail. magnets are good too, as most people have fridges and printable magnetic media isn't too difficult to come by these days.
  6. "He then went on to say technically he was ok to fell the trees because the fence that he put up was on my side so the bit of land of mine on his side of the fence, he could technically claim squatters rights on." Not too sure that will wash unless he's defined and then registered the land as his. I'd get it reported and let HSE and Forestry Commission deal with it in addition to him sawing and stacking the logs on your side. That way you get the wood back, and someone else is dealing with the illegalities involved, thus removing you from it and with that, any question that you are making a profit.
  7. fliers can be done in a stylish and informative way, even like a business card and you won't look like a pikey. that said if you carpet bomb places with them it might not look so good, but there again, something that looks good would be fine, and generate business on what might normally be a quiet day. We had fliers at Bartletts and were told to deliver them a few doors up and down from jobs, with the promise of a bonus if jobs were got from them - I don't think anyone on the "front line" ever saw any bonuses though, so the delivery process was slack to say the least, especially with all the other work to do, though it has to be said that the rep didn't seem too bothered in getting them out when work was slow. My background has been in club nights and music, so flier design and advertising methods strike me as simple, though some people are too prepared to just write things off. For example, talk to the local press, write an article about the dangers of mismanaged trees, especially with the strange weather we've been having. Public awareness can only be a bonus, and if your company is associated with that, then its the name thats on peoples' lips. In answer to the question about printing though, we used to get century 23 in Edinburgh to do ours. There are cheaper places, but c23 have a quick turnaround. You really shouldn't pay more than £125 for 5000 full colour, double sided, A6 fliers (though A7 can be compact and good). oh yes, also make sure you get printed on good quality/weight card. My personal thought is that business cards or fliers printed on good quality recycled materials, should also sport a note and symbol explaining that they are on a recycled product (especially in this industry) as this is another thing that will stick in peoples minds. well hope that rant helps.
  8. Balls! I'd optimistically taken that to be filling in the forms to ask for relevant permissions......
  9. There is a polar shift (of 23 degrees I think) every 10,000 years or so. The Last time it happened shifted the Old North Pole to the left to what is now Hudson Bay. It caused the current south Pole to freeze right over where there had been a thriving landmass in previous times (Columbus era mapmakers showed detailed coastal edges copied from ancient maps, that were only verified by the U.S. navy in the 1950's by use of sonar technology) possibly Atlantis. i've run out of thoughts.... sorry
  10. i usually have a handsaw on my harness, but this week haven't had one with me. sometimes it just feels better, calmer to use one, and helps get all that crap done that isn't worth starting an engine for. I also like how much quieter they are when you start them up!
  11. I was shown this when craig johnson visited college one day. Install normal climbing system. Install PPE rated small pulley above friction hitch and secure back to harness bridge. Take rope from below pulley and above friction hitch and insert into ree dee or other cambium saver. Job done
  12. unless you tie a shoelace to the cam of the ropeman so its always reachable/pullable
  13. gave this a quick blast today. general consensus is that its a work of genius, simple and adjustable.
  14. nothing below me to break my fall if it all goes tits up!
  15. I've only been climbing a couple of years, but recently switched to a v.t. its a different climbing method - but i prefer it soo much to a prussik.
