  4. what sort of size are these laurels? The Act dictates that TPO "cannot be applied to bushes or shrubs". However for the purposes of TPO legislation , the high court has held that a "tree" is 'anything which ordinarily one would call a tree' !!!! clear as mud i know but you may be able to argue the toss with them on that. Alternatively, see if you can get the any FC grants on the wood - then the work would be exempt - might save your client a few quid too OR talk directly to TO / landscape / ecology officer, with a bit of luck they might know what they talking about! Good luck!
  5. I am with Andy - Mick set the standard for me too and it was a stroke of luck that my first break was working with Eastwoods rather than a lesser firm - i dont think i would be insisting on the standards i do now if it werent for him and his pioneering ways, rest his soul.
  6. Paul can you manage a few days next week? Lost your bloody number!
  7. Sorry forgot to say - working out of Chelmsford. Dont get time to check this page often so if you are interested, please call. Nice to hear from you Sarn't Paul!
  8. Need sensible goundies for subbing ASAP. Tickets an advantage although we do have capacity for unqualified, hard working groundies too. Driving licence a bonus and if you unlucky enough to be as old as me and drive a 7.5t then even better! Rates to be discussed. Call Gordon 07875567997
  9. if its a small, coral shaped orange colony (Nectria cinnabarina) spreading up the trunk, often found on sycamore then it is nothing to worry about - the reason it is colonising the necrotic bark may be though. Pound to a pinch of sh*t its sooty bark disease (Cryptostroma corticales) and then coral spot has colonised the dead tissue. Probably anyway.....
  10. Hello mate, keep in touch - we are based near Writtle and always looking for useful people although to be honest at the moment we just waiting to see how new year pans out. Give me a shout on a private message and i'll give you my no. and pop in to say hello and we'll take it from there ?
  11. multiple step cuts down a stem before dropping it so it collapses on impact into presentable bits for chipper? using silky to retrieve that line that is teasingly out of reach.... lowering bits off MEWP bucket or using the hired one to shift big lumps of heavy flicking the butt of cut branch as peels away with 200 to get a bit more clearance i better stop.

Yeah Stantons still sell it - but only as 'compost accelerator'. Not really much good when filling in the ol' COSHH assessment. In fact its a bit naughty cos its in un marked bags with no MSDS or chip info on it. Have you had any problems with salt leaching and killing everything around it? Had considered it as an alternative but gone for Timbrel instead - yet to see its efficacity.
  13. mmm, softbank, i think i know a chap, good lookin bloke based near Chelmsford...little ratty face...slightly malodourous... Gary, thats his name
  14. There are 2 main probs with the leaves as already pointed out , the leaf miner but also guignadia, a fungus. In the short term it is as said, not significant other than aesthetically but the significance of early leaf loss several years on the trot has already caused massive decline in several trees near me - and some of these with no signs of bleedin canker! i think the chestnut is going to disappear from the landscape in 20 years time but there is no need to hurry it along by diagnosing brown leaves as terminal. The canker is another matter, also progressive - smaller trees succomb sooner as it ends up girdling the vascular system pretty quickly but big ol' trunks seem to be able to deal. Any way it is a slow death and not something that causes the trees to keel over suddenly - areas of the crown will begin to dieback noticeably so you get an early warning
  15. Hi all, i am not a huge fan of bracing per se - often feel it's recommended by tree surgeons who fancy swinging about without doin the hard work for a change and havent really investigated the mechanics of the thing - massive branch and insubstantial system etc. Having said that, i have a couple to install! Now I did a few cobra systems way back and didnt realise how many new systems have popped up since. Am interested to have a closer look at the alternatives as to simply order a load then stand scratching my head seems a little stupid. Would be like to know given as previous threads have pointed out all systems have their pros/cons what the general fav is? vis a vis cost /efficiency/ease of installation (we have to assume that properly installed they all work!)
  16. Hello all. I run a small tree surgery company based near Chelmsford, Essex. We are always looking to make contact with climbers in the area and can offer a pretty reasonable package to either subbies or anyone who wants employment. Anyone interested can contact me on [email protected]. Thanks, G
