Hi everyone I am after soom advice on the diameter and length of rope that should be used when tying a vt. I use 13mm and a blakes, now after reading about the vt system i would like to have a go myself. Plus a good place to purchase the rope needed. cheers James
  5. got to be done:thumbup: thanks again for drawing our atention to it pardon the pun!
  6. yeah know what you mean about the camping gone more family than wild fun nights! but they have recently put in loads more facilities plus the kings head is building a surf lodge thing:drunk: ps surf was a mellow 1-2ft and blazing sunshine this morning before work. nothing better than having a good surf before a good climb
  7. i think i will put my monies worth in. I personally think that it would be completely impractical to bring a drug test across the board and it would never happen within small companies. Large companies like the utilities do drug test and i think that this is acceptable. My gripe is not with weed (although mentally addictive) its the other drugs like e's and charlie. When i was in the military i knew lads that were taking cocktails of drugs all weekend and then passing the piss test monday morning. But work wise they were useless till around wednesday. There are worse drugs that your colleauge could be taking and compromising your safety!!!! The answer is if you won't to work for a company that drugs test then stay clean. However most small arb companies are never going to test so if you smoke weed choose your job round your addiction/habit. personally i have turned up for work seriously hungover and to be honest still p****d and i was frightened how easy it is to nearly get a chog on your head and to nearly put your arms through the chipper! I would never do that again! After all that who Knows weather drug testing is right! but is still illeagal and compromises h&s:wave:

  9. my old business partner told me a story once how a bloke he worked weekends with used to bring his dog on jobs with him. one day my mate had taken the whole tree down and was left with just the stump. as he was cutting it down low the dog came running up to the tree and the end of the bar caught him in the head, spinning the dog off into a bush. They thought he would be dead but he was shaking and cowering in the bush with half his head missing. Luckily the dog survived and can still be seen in swansea (staffy) with its scars. just goes to prove the saying never work with kids or animals.
  10. i am currently working as a grass cutter at present for a local council (until a tree job becomes available!) and we only wear safety goggles and safety shoes. obviously ear defenders but i choose an mp3 player instead as i find strimming a complete bore:bawling: so as far as my employer wants is ear, eye and foot protection. no need for hard hat unless there is a danger of something landing on head. the only hse i have concerns a clearing saw not a line strimmer hope that helps:wave:
  11. Hiya there everyone I have been in the game 3 years now and have mastered both the ground work and climbing. I have my tickets but i am yearning to get more academic qualifications. Alot of what i read is spot on, i trained with richard olley and the courses were really good. I have picked up alot of information quickly through working hard and gaining trust, then tapping into other peoples experience and knowledge. now i have come up to a wall where i feel i need to get some formal qualifications for 2 reasons. One is for my self the pursuit of knowledge, the other is commercial i want the customer to know they are employing a tree surgeon who knows what they are talking about. To all those about to jump down my throat experience and tickets sometimes outway idiots with quals and vice versa, but i would like to be an all rounder. The trouble i have is i live in Swansea and have a family and morgate. There is now where to go! i am even considering a hort course just to get some of the basics on board. After all that i just want to ask how hard are these correspondance courses are? and are they worth the paper their written on. cheers
